The Rock monastery
“St. Dimitar Bassarbovski”

Located at 36 km from Koprivets.

Bassarbovo monastery is situated in the canyon-like valley of the river Lom, 15 km away from Rousse, near the village of Bassarbovo.
It is the only active rock monastery in Bulgaria today.
There are about three hundredcaves rock caves, forty of which has been used as churches.



This site was inhabited after XIIth century AD by Christian hermits.
In XVI century the monastery was abandoned.
In 1937 it was restored by monk Chrisant.
The Bassarbovo monastery is first mentioned in a Turkish tax documents from 1431.



The legend says that Saint Dimitar Bassarbovski lived there to the end of his life.
The relics of the famous monk are preserved in the Patriarchal Cathedral "St. St. Constantine and Elena" in Bucharest, Romania.



Nowadays you can visit the rock church and some parts of the monastery like a monk cell, where lived father Chrisant.

You can enjoy a beautiful garden, when is situated the well, dug out by St. Dimitar.
The water within is healing and many of the visitors after tasting it come back to the monastery again.
