Aleut Islands double paddle construction plan

Le doppie pagaie degli Aleuti erano leggere e resistenti. Queste fondamentali caratteristiche erano ottenute adoperando legni leggeri e facendo pale sottili, provviste di una costolatura di rinforzo lungo tutto il retro di ciascuna pala.

Aleut's double paddles were light and resisting. These foundamental characteristics were riched by means of light woods,  manufacturing the two thin blades and reinforcing them with a rib on the back side.

Così come il kayak (baidarka per gli Aleuti) anche la doppia pagaia veniva costruita su misura.

Measuring :

Like the Kayak (baidarka for the Aleuts) also the double paddle was built on size.

To fix the (total) length (of the double paddle) measure the distance between ground and the tip of your fingers, with your arm up stretched. But if your kayak is wider than 53 cm. (as just suggested on the book "the Aleutian Kayak), increase consequently the double paddle length.

The shaft length between the two blades should be as per the width of your shoulder width (on average 46 cm.) or the distance between your hands has to be equal to the external width of the coaming.

The maximum width of the blades varies normally from 7.6 to 8.8 cm.

This double paddle is the replica of the original one located in the Museum "COLLECTION SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION".

To build it shoud be advisable the use of the wood (Spruce) sized as per A).

If it is difficult to find full length wood, standardized wood  sizes available on "Brico Centers" could be used.

In such case see instruction as per B).

Misure rilevate sull'originale = Measure surveyed on the original.     Larghezza = Width     Spessore = Thickness

Tutte le misure sono in mm. =  All dimensions are in mm.

Per incollare usare colla a 2 componenti. =  For gluing two components glue is required (marine glue).

Come tenere la doppia pagaia  =  How to hold the double paddle.

Lato verso prua     Lato verso poppa  =  Side towards bow   Side towards stern.

Vista della pala  =  View of the blade.

Disegnare con cura il perimetro della doppia pagaia. Tenere il manico largo non meno di 32mm. per permettere poi la sagomatura. segare le parti superflue. =  Draw carefully the double paddle perimeter. Keep the shaft width not less than 32 mm. to allow afterwards the shaping. Saw off all the needless parts.

Piallare fino al filo inferiore. =  Plane untill the lower line. Disegnare la costolatura  =  Draw the central rib.

Disegnare il centro ed i termini dell'arrotondamento dei bordi delle pale e segnare le sezioni di riferimento.

=  Draw the center line and the blade edges thickness  and make the reference marks of the sections.

Si suggerisce di costruire una dima, in metallo o compensato sottile, riproducente le mezze sezioni in scala 1 : 1, riportate a lato.  =  It is suggested to manufacture a  thin metal or plywood template, reproducing in scale 1: 1 half sections of those drawn on the left.

Sgrossare con raspa e rifinire con carta vetrata passando da quella a grana grossa a quelle più fini.

=  Rough with a rasp and refine using, in sequences, decreasing foils of sandpaper.

Finitura  =  Finishing.  I colori tradizionali sono il rosso ocra (mattone) ed il nero.  The traditional colors are the red ocher (brick color) and black.

Si consiglia di utilizzare colori molto diluiti in modo da fare risaltare la venatura del legno. Finire con tre mani di vernice trasparente e marina avendo cura di carteggiare, con carta abrasiva (600) all'acqua, prima della seconda e terza mano.

=  It is suggested to utilize thin down colours in order to show up the wood veins. End with three layers of marine varnish, taking care to wet sand (paper type 600 ), before the second and third layers.   (Renzo Beltrame 1996)
