Bond deve trovare il "solex agitator" un meccanismo che assorbe le radiazioni solari e conferisce un enorme potere a chiunque lo possiede. Ma è in corsa anche Francisco Scaramanga, un assassino su scala mondiale che brandisce una particolare pistola d'oro. Quando 007 scopre di essere il prossimo obiettivo di Scaramanga, viene catturato in un mortale gioco al gatto e topo. Bond si ritrova ad avere a che fare anche con l'esotica amante di Scaramanga Andrea Anders e con Nick Nack, la cui piccola taglia cela le sue abilità mortali. Anche se Bond ha dalla sua l'aiuto della bellissima Mary Goodnight deve superare terribili prove per scampare ad un'enorme esplosione sulla remota isola di Scaramanga.
