Participants in training environments in Japan may exhibit some of the following behaviours:

  • Quiet -- non-interrupting
  • Silence.
  • Non-voluntary with answers to questions or 'problems' case studies etc.
  • Help each other, especially with 'difficult' questions or problems.
  • Prefer reading and writing to speaking

Some of the core values and beliefs that may be 'running this behaviour' are:

  • Hierarchy is very important.
  • Group harmony is essential to maintain.
  • Status of people is recognized as essential information in terms of how they may be treated/addressed.

Some Do's may be:

  • 'Lockstep'
  • Board work
  • Reading with written questions
  • Group work with group reporting back through 'elected' group leader.
  • Use family names unless otherwise indicated.
  • Nominate carefully to avoid loss of face.

Some Don'ts may be:

  • Give surprises
  • Expect quick verbal responses to questions.
  • Use first names or 'nicknames'.
  • Do brainstorming.
  • Do groupwork in a competitive spirit.
  • Try to fill 'silences'.
  • Try to 'jolly along' the session.
  • Ask open questions of the group and expect a show of hands to respond.
  • Use 'rhetorical' question devises.
