Participants in training environments
in Japan may exhibit some of the following behaviours:
- Quiet -- non-interrupting
- Silence.
- Non-voluntary with answers to questions or 'problems' case studies etc.
- Help each other, especially with 'difficult' questions or problems.
- Prefer reading and writing to speaking
Some of the core values and beliefs that may be 'running this behaviour' are:
- Hierarchy is very important.
- Group harmony is essential to maintain.
- Status of people is recognized as essential information in terms of how they may be
treated/addressed.
Some Do's may be:
- 'Lockstep'
- Board work
- Reading with written questions
- Group work with group reporting back through 'elected' group leader.
- Use family names unless otherwise indicated.
- Nominate carefully to avoid loss of face.
Some Don'ts may be:
- Give surprises
- Expect quick verbal responses to questions.
- Use first names or 'nicknames'.
- Do brainstorming.
- Do groupwork in a competitive spirit.
- Try to fill 'silences'.
- Try to 'jolly along' the session.
- Ask open questions of the group and expect a show of hands to respond.
- Use 'rhetorical' question devises.
