Note:
SLRR (source language reference readers) = Italian ENEL
management
TLRR (target language reference readers) = English or
American newspaper editors
ST = Souce text
TT = Targe text
The purpose of this task is to see if you can translate
into English the communicative intent of a text in Italian,
specifically a press release from ENEL. Your SLRRs are the ENEL
management; your TLRRs are the editors of two newspapers (thus you
must write two different releases): the London Financial Times
and the Los Angeles Times.
FORM:
0 = No indications of student, course, date, assignment
etc. on top and/or tiny margins and/or
difficult-to-read handwriting and/or lots
of spelling and punctuation and grammar mistakes.
1= The
opposite of the above. If one element is missing, the student does
not get the point.
CONTENT (see the handout in the new, slightly
changed version here

The press releases are:
1 =
well translated communicatively. The release makes the TLRRs
feel the overall comunicative intent that the SLRRs saw in the
original, in a way consonant with the TLRR culture.
– 0 =
poorly translated communicatively. The overall comunicative
intent changes from ST to TT; even if the ideas are the same, the
text “says” something divergent; it has a different sense
and impact.
1 =
with Weltanschauung transposed.
The text expresses the ideas and
worldview
of the original, adapted to the
target culture only to the extent necessary to be readily understood
and accepted. (Alternatively,
the text has not been recast for the target Weltanschauung
but
manages to draw the TLRRs into the SL Weltanschauung
and
thus widen their cultural perspective.)

0 = with Weltanschauung changed.
The text is a liberal adaptation
from the original that, while conveying the same overall
communicative intent, expresses a different view of the world –
the text may be an attempt at an
auteur
translation.

structures. The genre, topic, storyline or outline, etc. are the

storyline or outline, etc. have been rewritten
to meet the two previous criteria.

micro senses. Almost
all the semantic fields are the same throughout the text, even the
prosody and phraseology sound similar: it's like reading the
original, semantically and comunicatively.

Weltanschauung
and
communicative intent, but a translation nonetheless.
