INSTRUCTIONS
NOTE: WHEN YOU RETURN THE
EVALUATION SHEET TO THE TEACHER,
DO NOT INCLUDE THIS
SHEET: KEEP IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
Students
PRINT a copy of their paper and bring it to class on TUESDAY, October
17th, for evaluation by the Group Leader (or a substitute
elected by the group). The Leader discusses her/his criteria for each
paper with the entire group, using the
following guidelines, then gives a mark from 0 (zero) to 5
(five)..
FORM:
The student uses abundant connectives appropriately (according to the
handout) = 1
The
student uses few connectives and/or many are inappropriate (according
to the handout) = 0
CONTENT There are four
categories; students get 0 or 1 point in each category.
(a.)
The preliminary information* is complete = 1. The
preliminary information* is not complete = 0.
*bibliographic
data, new terms, headings for each section. Note: The number of new
terms varies with each student; those unfamiliar with Graddol's
language will put many terms, those familiar will put few terms.
(b.) The RÉSUMÉ
OF THE ARGUMENTATION
is accurate. = 1.
The RÉSUMÉ
does not give all points. = 0
“Accurate” means
that if Graddol read the
RÉSUMÉ
, he would say “That is exactly what I meant!”
It also means that the student has seen all the possible
weak points in Graddol's reasoning..
(c.) The
DISCUSSION of the text is penetrating. = 1.
The DISCUSSION
is merely repetitive. = 0.
“Penetrating” means that
the DISCUSSION is not a simple repetition of the
ideas in the text; it helps the reader
understand what Graddol is getting at, even when he does not say so
explicitly.
(d.) The SUMMARY is
effective; the APPRAISAL OF WORTH is honest.
= 1. Both are superficial. = 0.
An “effective”
SUMMARY gives all the essential points in just a
few words. An “honest” APPRAISAL
of the worth of the text shows that the student has really
tried to see if the text can help him/her grasp reality better.
Group Leaders can add a comment after a student's mark if they want, but it is not necessary.
