INSTRUCTIONS

NOTE: WHEN YOU RETURN THE EVALUATION SHEET TO THE TEACHER,
DO NOT INCLUDE THIS SHEET: KEEP IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.

Students participate in the discussion using British Academic English (BAE) For this exercise, that means just one thing: using formal discourse with numerous explicit discourse markers (see Warwick site) and avoiding typical American discourse markers (see Michigan site) .

The Group Leader marks their participation in three ways: as a presenter, as a listener, as a member.  The Group Leader also justifies the marks in a brief comment after each member's mark. (If space is insufficient, write on the back.)

Criteria for a good presenter: fluent and intelligible, consistent use of British Academic Style; IF POSSIBLE use of the features indicated in the Hertfordshire guidelines; clear explanation of the content of the article in terms that the other students effectively understand. In short, a good presenter has four qualities. She or he:
a. is fluent, b. talks like a top British student, thus uses many markers, c. explains things clearly so ALL understand.

PRESENTER POINTS: 0 = none of the qualities    1 = one or two qualities;    2 = all three qualities.

 -  Criteria for a good listener: attentive direct gaze, constant back-channeling, overlap to request clarification but no multiple floor taking, 4-step questioning (all 4 steps explained in the handout (click here) must be used), questions show good understanding of speaker. In short, a good listener:
a. gives regular feedback, b. takes orderly turns, c. asks specific questions, d.shows understanding.

LISTENER POINTS: 0 = none of the qualities    1 = one or two qualities;    2 = three or four qualities.

 - Criteria for a good group member: a. helps with the organization of the recording, b. collaborates constructively in the discussion on evaluation, c. helps other students who are less able than he/she; d. is punctual and well-prepared. To get a point for this category, a student must have ALL the qualities.

GROUP MEMBER POINTS: 0 = from zero to three qualities    1 = all four qualities.
