MY GROUP'S EVALUATION CRITERIA
You
are free to adopt the criteria that you judge best. Please indicate
them here.
Some students have asked me for an example of
criteria. I am giving an example below but, again, you are free to
choose the criteria you want.
1.
the transcript of a short exchange (approximately 4 utterances) while
you were your double.
-- Is the transcription easy to read?
If it is written with terrible handwriting on an old piece of paper,
it should not receive credit.
-- Is the transcription accurate?
Note: If it is impossible to hear words, did the student indicate
that something is missing, for example like this: PETER: “Yeah,
I like reggae music, too, especially xxxx xxx xx xxxxxxxx.” (It
was impossible to hear the last words and “xxxx xxx xx
xxxxxxxx” indicates APPROXIMATELY how many words have been
omitted.)
2. the transcript of a short exchange
(approximately 4 utterances) while you were yourself.
-- Same
criteria: easy to read and accurate.
3.
a description of the differences (if any) in your English in each
case.
-- Does the report give: (a.) lexical and syntactical
differences?* (b.) pragmatic differences** (c.) cultural
differences?***
*Example of a linguistic difference: “As my
double I said 'I'm gonna go”, as myself using scholastic
English I said “I will go.”
**Pragmatic difference:
“As my double I said 'The dooooor!!”,
as myself using scholastic English I said “Please close the
door.”
***Cultural difference: “As
my double I said 'We're brothers, bro!!”, as myself using
scholastic English I said “We're friends now.”
(It
is OK to give just lexical and syntactical differences, but the best
reports will give pragmatic and cultural differences, too.:
If
there are no differences, most students will simply say so. The best
students will say what they MIGHT
have said to be different.)
4.
a description of the differences (if any) in the reaction of your
double to your English in each case.
-- Does the report
explain the differences clearly and in detail? Does
the report give examples to justify a statement?*
*NOT “Peter
was surprised”, but “Peter was surprised: he started to
stutter: “Well, you...you....you sound like Bob Marley!”
