The word icon (eikon) means "image". Icons are religious painting on woody panel in byzantine or greek or russian style.
In orthodox Cristianity icons are not only beautiful art form, but also a way of living intensely one's own faith and an aid to get near holiness through identification with subject of icon (Christ, Madonna, Saints).
The Technique
Icons are a form of visual theology of the Holy Scriptures, for this reason it is said that icons are not painted, but written.
Giovanna Ferraboschi paints icons following traditional rules, becouse she believes that the greatest originality in icons painting is the fidelity to tradition.
Under icon composition there is a precise geometry: circles, squares and diagonals. These shapes are harmoniously weaved: this is the language of sacred geometry.
Wooden board is prepared following ancient technique: on the board she put many coat of plaster combined with gluey solution; this is a hard-working process.
Afterwards she draws the holy subject, the background and applies gold sheets.
Painting is accurate and respect shape and colour symbology.
Sometimes she applies into relief a silver covering well finished (riza): this is a veneration sign.
The artist
Giovanna Ferraboschi was born in San Faustino di Rubiera (Reggio Emilia, Italy).
She has got a diploma in art school in Modena and then attended many specialization courses.
At the present time she lives in Bellinzago Lombardo (Milan).
She has been freqeuenting Laboratorio dell'Immagine directed by Aldo Sterchele in Bussero (Milan) for four years.
She frequented an iconography course directed by Giovanni Raffa.
Besides icons she draws and paints in watercolours, in oils, in pastel, in ink, in tempera colours.
She exhibited her paintings in Lombardia and Emilia.
