Trama : Catherine Ballou (Jane Fonda), un'aspirante insegnante, sta viaggiando in treno verso Wolf City, Wyoming, per visitare suo padre, Frankie Ballou, che là dirige un ranch. Durante il viaggio aiuta involontariamente un uomo, Clay Boone (Michael Callan), accusato di essere un razziatore di bestiame, ad eludere il suo carceriere, lo sceriffo, mentre Jed, lo zio di Boone, un ubriacone mascherato da predicatore, distoglie l'uomo di legge.
Quando Catherine raggiunge il ranch, però, scopre che la Wolf City Development Corporation sta cercando di portare via il ranch di suo padre, il cui unico difensore è un indiano educato, Jackson-Due Orsi. Clay e Jed, anche se a malincuore, si propongono di aiutare Catherine. La ragazza ingaggia anche il leggendario pistolero Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin) per contribuire a proteggere il padre da Tim Strawn, alias Silvernose (anche questo interpretato da Lee Marvin), il killer assunto per minacciare Frankie. Quando Shelleen arriva, però, si scopre che è un ubriacone vagabondo ed incapace che non è letteralmente in grado di colpire il lato di un fienile quando spara e i cui pantaloni cadono quando tira fuori la pistola.
Strawn uccide Frankie, ma gli abitanti si rifiutano di assicurare l'assassino alla giustizia, e Catherine diventa una fuorilegge in cerca di vendetta conosciuta come Cat Ballou. Lei ei suoi quattro collaboratori rubano treno che trasporta il libro paga di Wolf City, e Shelleen, ispirato dal suo amore per Cat (unilaterale, visto che la ragazza ama Clay), dà un ultimatum a Strawn e poi lo uccide. In seguito egli ammette casualmente che Strawn era suo fratello. Cat si spaccia per una prostituta e affronta il boss della città, Sir Harry Percival, proprietario della Wolf City Development Corporation. Ne deriva una colluttazione durante la quale Harry viene ucciso, e per questo Cat è condannata ad essere impiccata.
Proprio quando il nodo scorsoio le viene messo intorno al collo, tuttavia, la sua banda arriva e attua un salvataggio spericolato.

Retroscena : Nat King Cole morì di cancro al polmone molti mesi prima dell'uscita del film. Iniziò a mostrare i sintomi della malattia durante le riprese del film.
Kirk Douglas rifiutò il ruolo di Shelleen; ironicamente, molti anni dopo avrebbe interpretato un doppio ruolo simile nel film L'uomo del fiume nevoso. Jack Palance, invece, desiderava disperatamente questo ruolo, ma non gli fu mai offerto. Ann-Margret fu la prima attrice a cui fu chiesto di interpretare Catherine, ma rifiutò.
Mentre riceveva l'Oscar, Lee Marvin disse: "Metà di questo Oscar appartiene ad un cavallo da qualche parte là fuori nella valle".
All'inizio del film, la "Torch Lady" della Columbia Pictures fu sostituita con una Cat Ballou a cartoni animati, che sparava con le pistole in aria.

Synopsis : Catherine Ballou, an aspiring schoolteacher, is traveling by train to Wolf City, Wyoming, to visit her rancher father, Frankie Ballou. En route she unwittingly helps accused cattle rustler Clay Boone elude his captor, the sheriff, when Boone's Uncle Jed, a drunkard disguised as a preacher, distracts the lawman. She reaches the ranch to find that the Wolf City Development Corporation is trying to take away the ranch from her father, whose only defender is an educated Indian, Jackson Two-Bears. Clay and Jed appear and reluctantly offer to help Catherine. She also wires legendary gunfighter Kid Shelleen to come and help protect her father from fast-drawing Tim Strawn, alias Silvernose, the hired killer who is threatening Frankie. Shelleen arrives, a drunken stumblebum who is literally unable to hit the side of a barn when he shoots and whose pants fall down when he draws his gun. Strawn kills Frankie, but the townspeople refuse to bring him to justice, and Catherine becomes a revenge-seeking outlaw known as Cat Ballou. She and her four associates rob a train carrying the Wolf City payroll, and Shelleen, inspired by his love for Cat (unrequited because she loves Clay), shapes up and kills Strawn. Later he casually admits that Strawn was his brother. Cat poses as a prostitute and confronts town boss Sir Harry Percival, owner of the Wolf City Development Corporation. A struggle ensues; Harry is killed; and Cat is sentenced to be hanged on the gallows. Just after the noose was placed around her neck, Uncle Jed (again as a fake preacher) cuts the rope as she falls through the trapdoor. Her gang then spirits her away in a daring rescue.

Background : Nat King Cole died of lung cancer several months before the film was released. He started showing symptoms of the disease on the film.
Among many others, Kirk Douglas turned down the role of Shelleen; ironically, many years later he would play a similar double role in The Man from Snowy River. Jack Palance desperately wanted the role but was never offered it.
Ann-Margret was first choice for the title role but turned it down.
At his acceptance at the Oscars, Lee Marvin opened by saying, "Half of this Oscar belongs to a horse someplace out in the valley".
In the film's beginning, the Columbia Pictures "Torch Lady" did a quick-change into a cartoon Cat Ballou, who drew and fired her sixguns into the air.
