The Life Cycle Assessment of composting plant

The purpose of this study is the environmental analysis of composting plant in the commune of San Rocco al Porto (Lodi, Italy).

This work has been done in collaboration with ENEA (National Research Institute for Energy and Environment), BIO.GE.CO. srl group and AIMAG spa group.

To accomplish this study, the LCA(Life Cycle Assessment) methodology was employed. The LCA revealed to be very efficient, because it allows considering all the phases involved in the waste management, from the waste collecting to the final treatment.

LCA enables a comparison between different choice of composting plants and landfilling of waste. The goal is the analysis of the environmental profile of the waste management done in the composting plant of BIO.GE.CO.

On the basis of the analysis results, the main conclusion that can be put in evidence are the biggest impact is caused by the discouragement system smells, the fuel consumption and electric power consumption. The advantageous for the environment is the production of avoided products amending.
