The Dyno-My-Rhodes Hammer-Tip modification
Skylark explains how the wooden hammer-tip modification was done:
The hammer-tip mod has wood-core tips. The tips are triangular in shape and are a plastic-coated piece of wood. It *really* accentuates that Dyno-My sound! If you can get your hands on a tune by Earth,Wind & Fire called "In Time" (from their FACES CD), you'll hear the sound of this piano. Also... Stevie Wonder had this upgrade.
If you wanna try making the tips yourself, it's not that hard. You have to buy a couple of small wooden strips (about 1/4" X 1/4", you can get 'em at hobby shops and you'll need something like two three-foot pieces) and sand or cut them so they're triangular in cross-section. Looking at the wooden strips from the end, you can draw a line from one corner to the opposing corner. That'll give you the basic shape. When you have the wood shaped, shrink two layers of shrink-wrap (exactly the kind you use on audio cable ends) around the wood. Then slice the long, plastic-covered wood sticks into little sections the width of the original hammer tips. Pull off the old ones and glue in the new ones. Voila!
