| Paulus Diaconus (c.720-799) the historian of the Lombards, came of a noble Lombard family in Friuli and was educated at the Royal Court in Pavia. Later he entered the Monastery of Monte Cassino. His greatest achievement was Historia Langobardorum, based on written sources such as Origo Gentis Langobardorum and on oral tradition. It is the most important source of Lombard history. |
