Is lust in action, and till action, lust
Is perjur'd, murd'rous, bloody full of blame,
Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,

Enjoy'd no sooner but despised straight,
Past reason hunted, and no sooner had
Past reason hated as a swallowed bait,
On purpose laid to make the taker mad.

Made in pursuit and in possession so,
Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme,
A bliss in proof and prov'd, a very woe,
Before a joy propos'd behind a dream,

All this the world well knows yet none knows well,
To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

Spreco di spirito vitale sciupato in un ventre impudico
È l'atto di lussuria; e fin che non diviene atto, la lussuria
È spergiura e assassina, sanguigna e colma d'odio,
Selvaggia, illimitata, rozza, crudele e infida;

Non appena è goduta la si disprezza senza esitare;
Inseguita oltre ogni ragione, ma appena posseduta
È odiata oltre ogni ragione, come un amo
Appositamente calato per fare impazzire chi abbocca.

Fa impazzire chi la caccia e impazzisce chi la ottiene,
È illimitata quando la si cerca, la si ha, la si è avuta,
Felicità nell'atto, e poi, grande sciagura:
Prima, promessa di gioia; poi, soltanto un sogno.

Ben sa il mondo tutto ciò - eppure nessuno sa bene
Come evitare un paradiso che porta a tale inferno.
