James Newell Osterberg, nato il 21 Aprile 1947 a Muskegon, iniziò suonando la batteria, e formando la sua prima band, the Iguanas, nei primi anni sessanta. Dopo gli Iguanas, mise su The Stooges, considerati a tutti gli effetti una pre-punk band, una via di mezzo tra i Doors e i Velvet Underground. Stooges divennero molto conosciuti per le performance live di Iggy Pop, un vero animale da palco che raggiungeva l'auto-mutilazione. Il loro album di debutto chiamato semplicemente "The Stooges" fu prodotto da John Cale dei Velvet Underground e licenziato dall'Elektra nel 1969. Il primo album è "The idiot" (1977), mentre l'ultimo è "Beat 'Em Up" (2001).
