Sicily is a region in Southern Italy.  It's constituted by a homonymous island and various smaller islands and archipelagos: the Aeolis with Lipari, Ustica, the Egadi, Pantelleria and the Pelagi with Lampedusa.

The island is situated in the heart of the Mediterranean. It is governed by a special of autonomous regional Government. It has a surface of 25707 km2. The capital of Sicily is Palermo. Sicily is divided into 9 different provinces, each having a capital city and these are Agrigento, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Messina, Palermo, Ragusa, Siracusa and Trapani.

  


 

Sicily is a mountainous island: the highest mountain is the Mt. Etna, the highest volcano in Europe, which rises between the plane of Catania and the furrow of Simeto. Every island and archipelago of Sicily, except the Egadi and the Pelagi, are of volcanic origin. Besides Etna, the other volcanoes are Stromboli and Vulcano.
