M.E.P.

M.E.P ( Model European Parliament ) is a cultural, apolitical, without profit, association in which high school students take part and for some days they will be in the shoes of the Members of European Parliament.

About 150 students, including 6 pupils of “Regina Margherita”, took part in a national session this year simulating the European Parliament.

For us who represented “Regina Margherita”, it was a beautiful experience because we met a lot of other students who came from different cities of Italy and developed our cultural knowledge.

The national session went on for 5 days. On the 1st day in Capri there was the official opening of the national session with the mayor of Capri and Anacapri. In the afternoon there were Team-Building and Ice-Breaking activities to socialize with the other students.

The following days, as the European Parliament, the delegates were united in 10 committees and in each of these, the delegates spoke about a specific subject. The days were intense and we worked very hard but it was useful for each of us. The most emotional days, were General Assembly’s days because we feared to not be at the top of the situation. During these meetings we discussed the work done in the committees and defended our resolutions trying to have them passed.

It was a positive experience and we were able to express our opinions about very important subjects, such as international trade, culture and education, and  environment.

I’m Giulia Paganelli and I also took part in the MEP meeting this year in Naples together with Francesco and Maria Rita. Mep is made up of teachers, pupils from universities and high schools and parents, that give hospitality to pupils from different Italian cities.

It was a very important experience for me because I met new people and discussed important social, cultural and economic issues. It taught me about European citizenship and I also came to know about other customs and
traditions from  my own country. I think that the MEP experience improves your critical and relational abilities.

There are 10 different Commissions and everybody is involved in  one topic of his/her Commission.

How did we prepare for this experience? After being selected by some of our teachers, each of us studied some of the topics and researched documents for 3 months and on the 16th  April we went to Naples for the general assembly. During general assembly, everybody can express opinions and criticizes other bills. Those who intervene many times, get a higher score.

I understood many things about Europe and its politics now, in fact next year I would
like to become Chair to prepare pupils of my school for Mep.
