SOUND: Okay, obviously if you look at the notes above this may not look pretty, and it isn't at first glance, but it looks a lot worse than it sounds. The cook went to bed and left this one in the oven overnight, low volume half the time, but the vocals are out in front and when the volume dips for the bulk of the concert you can crank the sound and the high end is set nicely and things go pretty well. There is a lot of dirt on the recording though, but again, nothing so intrusive that you can't ignore. I think a lot of it stems from the overcooked vocals distorting so close to the surface. Lots of digi-scraping, but it's all light and I'll note most of it in the notes. It'll clean up easy I imagine should somebody be so inclined, and things are warm and balanced otherwise, especially Tony and that crazy bass.

BOTTOM LINE: Brave the oft-buzzy vocals and you'll hear one damn great show. Easily one of the best vocal performances I've heard in this set without question. Bob is putting on a phrasing clinic, marvelous. Highly recommended, here's hoping this gets a remaster and smoothing out by somebody who can afford to go through this with loving attention one day, it deserves it. Makes me want to go trade for the audience source just to grab a ticket and hear it again, this time with everybody else...

SOUND: Good. Everything is a balanced and the vocals are upfront. There is, as usual, a trifle muffled and compressed (or canned might be a better word for it) effect to the works, but it's punchy and has some charge to it, this is nice.

COMMENTS: What the hell kind of breakdown is going on in Watchtower? 'Break down' is more like it, that's the same noise my 1970 Nova used to make on really cold mornings. I can't remember the last time I looked at my speakers and told Bob to shut up. Out loud, how mental is that? I did at the end of Tangled, for some reason I couldn't take the yelling and I just snapped. Nice long, long harp, though. Bob is singing okay on this, but he's not exactly killing anything. What's better than having Bob butcher the intro to Lay Lady Lay with awful guitar, only to have it throw off his timing and his vocals make you laugh and shake your head? Not much, that was so bad it was worth sitting through. Nearly seven minutes of the worst guitar you're likely to hear from Bob, my word. Wow, Bob actually thanks the crowd after Little Moses, sad that that's news, but it is Bob, after all. I was listening to Good As I Been To You earlier today and they really caught his voice well on that album. It's no wonder he decided to play a few of those tunes every night here in 1993, and maybe that's a good indicator of whether or not you'll enjoy these acoustic sets: If you like that record, you'll probably love these acoustic sets, simple as that. I spun Gates of Eden twice and both times I lost track of how many verses he sang, he blows harp for so long I ended up losing what went before, that was odd. Bob's timing is off again on Don't Think Twice, it sounds as if his head isn't totally in the game here. He gets behind then yells double-time to try to catch up, not a good formula. I and I suffers the same fate, but all at once Bob calms down and lets a marvelous Simple Twist and What Good Am I? escape. I've said it a bunch and it bears repeating that it's disarming how fast Bob can go from sucking to singing so well, so beautifully, what a trip. I dare you to hunker down and spin What Good Am I? and tell me his vocals suck...consider this an official challenge, from me to you. Ignore his clunky guitar solo and the nearly four minutes of plotless, messy jamming, I'm talking about his vocals. Hey, another scarce Girl From the North Country ending, it's great not to hear It Ain't Me, Babe for a change. And a fairly good version, mellow and well done.

BOTTOM LINE: This show is back-loaded with highlights and you have to wade through some average water to get to them, but they're there, and worth hearing. (you can even skip ahead on the cd, I won't say a word, and you won't lose your Hardcore Fan merit badge, I'll see to that)

update 1/05 (thanks jbolley) :

Transition gaps fixed between tracks using careful digital editing.

Repaired the worst of the spikes during opening - three slivers of static were removed during intro.

Track markers moved to be better positions.

First ~7 seconds of d1 track 1 has been attenuated 8.0dB to compensate for the tapers record volume adjust - this is only on crowd noise during intro.

There is a break in the source between d1 track 7 and 8. no change made.
