As well as playing some dates with The Grateful Dead in 1987, Dylan guested at 3 other GD shows. I downloaded these from the Live Music Archive, and edited out the blank space at the end of tracks 8 and 11. Note that although Dylan plays on all tracks he does not sing on Track 1 or Tracks 4-8.

Please do not sell this compilation or convert to lossy formats, but feel free to weed, vine, or tree it, create artwork or to re-torrent it in the future.

Dylan & Baez Together 1963-1964

fixed by LK shn

Notes to the new edition.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was pointed out that the speed of the Forrest Hills Baez show (17 Aug 63) was way too fast. So, after due apologies from not noticing this problem before I sent it out, I decided to remaster the whole Baez concert at the correct speed (using 'Troubled and I Don't know Why' from The Baez set 'Rare Live & Classic' box set as a speed reference.
The original disk was a very full single CD, so when I slowed the Beaz set down (using the speed control on my Nakamicki deck), it then wouldn't fit on a single CD.
Because I had to spread it to two disks, I decided to add additional tracks (turned out to be more than an hour of additional tracks). The compilation now contains ALL the Dylan - Baez recordings that have circulated from 1963/4. Disk one is all 1963, Disk two is all 1964. Disk 1 is 75:52. Disk 2 is 64:20
Disk one.
Artwork is included on the Shn disks.
My notes to the first edition:
------------------------------------------------
Since the next Bootleg Series is expected to be the Halloween concert (31 Oct 64), I dug out some of these old tapes and I've mastered up a new CD (79:58) that captures the folk scene in the early 60's where Dylan was the guest at a Baez concert, and later Baez was a guest at the Dylan concert. I don't expect that Bootleg Series Vol 6 will include 'Silver Dagger' so here I have included a complete recording of it, for the first time anywhere.
1. Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, Aug 17, 1963:
Troubled And I Don't Know Why
Blowin' In The Wind
The tape I've used is a very high quality stereo PA tape. I've included the rest of the Baez set (14 songs) as it sets the scene nicely and this full show is probably quite rare. There are some nice Dylan connections in the full set list (Streets of Laredo / Railroad Boy / (unknown - sounds like an early Hard Rain type of song) / Little Darlin' / In the Pines / Pilgim of Sorrow / Where have all the Flowers Gone / 100 miles / I'm a Rambler, I'm a Gambler / Come all Ye Fair and Tender Maidens / 12 Gates into the City / The Lords Prayer / Amazing Grace / Silver Dagger / Troubled And I Don't Know Why (w Dylan) / Blowin' In The Wind (w Dylan) - cut at 2:13).
2. Forest Hills Tennis Stadium, Aug 8, 1964:
Mama, You Been On My Mind
It Ain't Me, Babe
With God On Our Side
This is from the fairly poor audience tape, but here presented in 'as good as it get's' quality. I've carefully removed the hiss, but there is is no disguising the over-recording on the original tape and the fairly turgid performances.
3. Philharmonic Hall, NYC, Oct 31, 1964:
Mama, You Been On My Mind
Silver Dagger
With God On Our Side
It Ain't Me, Babe
Here I've used a very rare AUDIENCE tape. The reason I've opted for a poor quality audience tape instead of the PA tape is simply 'Silver Dagger'. This the only place you can hear Dylan's two harmonica spots during Silver Dagger. There is a fragment of Silver Dagger on the full PA tape, but it cuts before Dylan plays the harmonica. On this audience tape Silver Dagger is complete. The quality is slightly below the quality of the audience tape for 8 Aug 64 and is presented here 'as good as it gets'.
Notes:
Gillian and David appeared in four segments on tonight's show, each
seperated by fades (in and out). The Singer Songwriter Show is a very
entertaining ski featuring both Gillian and David. There is a small
bit of static during 'Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor'. Track 07 is
introduced as being untitled, but it has been noted as 'Throw Me A
Rope' elsewhere.
Dan Mc Remastering Notes:
Concatenated all the files in order, ran a multi-filter (#1 below), re-marked the tracks, cut
the tracks, eliminated a few brief spots where there were sounds of a tape recorder
starting and stopping, then re-normalized the gain (to 0 dB).
1) Within a multi-filter (so that quantization errors are kept to a minimum):
Overall levels lowered by 4.0 dB
Eliminated hum at 100, 200 & 300 Hz
Sampled a silent section for noise and reduced sampled noise frequencies by 7 dB
Expanded hi & mid-highs at -60 dB on up
Expanded mid range at -50 on up
Expanded bass at -40 on up
Added 8db over 3.5 kHz with attack at 25 ms and release at 100 ms
Used a paragraphic equalizer (u-shaped) to increase treble and bass slightly
2) Re-normalized to 0 dB
*********************************
Here's the technical explanation of why it was most likely Europe in one of its generations, in case
anyone is interested (from an audio engineer):
"The dub or recording was made in a country where the power line frequency was 50 Hz. The tape recorder had
a full wave rectifier producing a doubling of the line frequency in terms of the fundamental ripple component
on the DC Power supply rail of the recorder, some of which got through to the recording head. For example,
50 Hz, 230 Volts is the standard line Frequency and Voltage in Europe."
This, plus the hiss, suggests at least one analog generation or an analog master. You don't get hums
like this with digital recording.
