The following factors (in order of priority)
affected the decisions concerning which audio and video sources were used for
each segment:
1. Completeness
2. Best video quality (usually, highest bitrate)
- ie in order of highest quality to lowest: BBC1 & BBC2 (4.81Mbps),
BBC3 (4.16ish), BBCi (3.50 - 3.96)
3. Secondary factor in questions of video
quality is the problem of the garish BBC3 logo. Other
sources are logo-free.
4. Additional factor for video quality is the
presence of on-screen banners - i.e. strobe warnings, upcoming programming,
sometimes errors in song titles (all to be avoided). On this occasion, it was
possible to choose video content so as to eliminate a strong language warning at the very start of the performance.
5. Best audio quality (usually, highest bitrate)
- ie in order of highest quality to lowest: BBC1 & BBC2 & BBC3
(256kbps), BBCi (128)
Under normal circumstances these factors make
decision-making reasonably straightforward, but on this occasion there was a
major complication:
The "best" quality broadcast of You
Know I'm No Good and Rehab should have been the Sunday evening BBC3 broadcast,
which was carried simultaneously (at a lower bitrate)
on BBCi. Unfortunately the 256k BBC3 audio was very degraded
(muffled, essentially) - although the simultaneous 128kbps BBCi audio sounded
OK. (Despite which, there was no audio problem with the preceding
broadcast of Tears Dry on Their Own).
Having made the decision to use the 128kbps
stream audio, and even though it would have been just as easy to use the 4.16
Mbps BBC3 video, I decided to use the corresponding BBCi video, since it was at an acceptable bitrate (compared to usual BBCi video bitrates)
- 3.50Mbps, partly out of a concern that there might also have been video
degradation in the BBC3 broadcast. Making this decision (to use logo-free
streams for 2 of the 3 BBC3 tracks) made it easier to
replace the video (but not audio) of the remaining BBC3-only track with its
BBCi equivalent. Therefore ALL video is logo-free (the price paid is a slightly
lower video bitrate for those 3 songs - 3.50Mbps
versus 4.16 for the BBC3 broadcast), but the best audio is used throughout.
Songs marked @ have 256kbps audio, otherwise audio is 128kbps.
1.
Arrival @ (used BBC2 highlights broadcast 2008-08-01.
BBC3/BBCi version (broadcast 2008-07-13) was a little shorter, but has one different video angle)
2.
intro (BBCi 3.64MBps source (broadcast 2008-07-13) for
Zalon's introduction - avoids strong language warning in other sources)
3.
Addicted (BBCi higher bitrate 3.96Mbps version (broadcast 2008-07-13))
4.
Just Friends (BBCi higher bitrate 3.96Mbps version,
with a tiny patch from 3.60Mbps version (both broadcast 2008-07-13), to replace
a video flaw (during song title caption) - this patch chosen because the
I-frames match exactly in these two sources)
5.
Tears Dry On Their Own @ (BBC3 broadcast 2008-07-13.
Used matching BBCi video with BBC3 audio)
6.
Cupid (not broadcast)
7.
Back To Black @ (first few frames from highest bitrate BBCi stream (broadcast
2008-07-13), then BBC1 version (broadcast 2008-07-13) - audio delayed by 2 frames)
8.
Wake Up Alone (not broadcast)
9.
Some Unholy War (not broadcast)
10.
Love Is A Losing Game (only shown on BBCi (broadcast
2008-07-13) - used highest bitrate available)
11.
Hey Little Rich Girl (not broadcast)
12.
You're Wondering Now (only shown on BBCi (broadcast
2008-07-13) - used highest bitrate available)
13.
You Know I'm No Good (BBC3/BBCi broadcast 2008-07-13 -
audio flaws in the BBC3 broadcast led to the BBCi source being used for video
and audio)
14.
Rehab (BBC3/BBCi broadcast 2008-07-13 - audio flaws in
the BBC3 broadcast led to the BBCi source being used for video and audio)
15.
Me And Mr. Jones (not broadcast)
16.

Back To Back
Total Time : [4:08]
Back To Black was also broadcast earlier in the
day on T4; that broadcast has the following differences:
* T4 logo
* 30 second montage of festival scenes in the
middle
* Sometimes scrolling banner with info
* Programme credits at
the end
* Cut short (2:42)
* Some different video edits, mainly more
close-ups of Amy
All of these differences are essentially
downgrades, except the last item,
which makes for a marginally different viewing
experience.
