About SAINT FRANCIS
I made these oil color paintings in
in order to define dimensions of the forms, relations
among the parts, and between the parts and the whole, which could be har-
moniously proportioned. After this research for the
initial lay-out, I proceeded with the painting, which focuses for the most part
on the comprehensive image, and doesn’t concentrate so
much on the definition of particulars and details. With practice, more-
over, I dedicated more attention and interest to
colors and their matches, in order for them to tune in among each other and
with
the global image.
These paintings, unlikely other works which I carried
out previously, are practiced on plywood panels, instead of on canvas. The
colors get absorbed more quickly on wood than on
canvas, drying up, therefore, in a shorter period of time, and making the
painting easier. Moreover, the panel turns out to be
lighter and more slender than the canvas with a frame over it, offering a view
and a relation with the picture that is simpler and
more direct. In this fashion I managed to go altogether without a frame and a
glass, which I believe are, most of the time, a
useless and cumbersome accessory.
