I
can't even begin to tell you how my plans were changed for me. The surgery
went great the surgeons tell me. I now have six screws (three on each side)
two little bar like things (what the screws go through first) and four
carbon cages going around my spine (what the screws go through second)
hooking my vertebrae together (what the screws finally connect to) in one
way shape or another to now fuse my spine and make it stronger than ever.
I am supposed to have even gained a bit of my height back, which I had
lost, due to the pain causing me to bend over all the time.
I
went in on the 30th of April and had the surgery that day, then was released
on the following Sunday, the 5th of May. I thought all was well having
the expected pain, (this surgery being the most painful surgery a person
can have) and looking forward to a recovery, which would leave me free
of pain, something I had not experienced in about four (4) years.
Well,
as the week of the 5th moved on the pain seemed to grow, in areas, which
were unexpected. We had called the pain management folks (That's right
gang, they now have created a new department which specialized in pain.
I didn't know this.) Anyway we set up to go see them on the 14th (Tuesday)
as that was as soon as they could see me, (I was hoping for some serious
relief I can tell you.) and the surgeons didn't seem to be interested when
I called the main guys office. (The consensus was, the work was done, expect
pain, I guess.) Well my wife Terri noticed my feet start to swell about
Friday (May 10th), and of course it was to late to get the doctor's on
the phone so we went through the weekend and called on Monday, (May 13th)
which by now, my feet were really swollen. (Any of you ever see the movie
"Big Trouble In Little China?" There is a guy in the movie that keeps inhaling
air at the end of the movie till he explodes. They show a shot of his feet,
just before he blows, and that is the way my feet looked. Cool huh, not!)
The
doctors also are in Los Angeles. (I don't think I mentioned this prior
to now, but we live in San Diego and the action is all in Los Angeles. Cedar
Sinai Hospital, Doctors, Pain Management, etc.) So
every trip is at least a two-hour jaunt each way, except the first trip
home from the hospital, which took six hours.)
We
call the surgeons on Monday and update them about the swelling and that
we are coming up to see the pain guys on Tues., and they say come by here
first, which we do.
We
arrive at the surgeons office on Tuesday and they decide I may have a blood
clot in my legs and need to be admitted immediately to the hospital to
have this checked out, and how could I have let this get so swollen, how
come I didn't call them sooner, etc. The doctors check and there are no
rooms in the hospital (the entire hospital) so I must be admitted through
emergency, which can only be done if I go meet a doctor there doing surgery,
(my supposed doctor) in emergency, and he gets me admitted. Fortunately
this is worked and I am admitted six (6) hours after arriving at the emergency
room.
I
left the hospital to return home on the 29th of May a couple of weeks later.
I
want to apologize for not being available for the chat some of you had
with Dan. I know it had to have gone great, for Dan is great, and you all
would have had a fun informative time had you done the chat with Dan. I
had planned on just going online and causing him a hard time for fun but
was not able to do so.
I
hope I can have Harlean and the team put together a chat again soon for
me to participate in with all who would like to. Maybe have someone else
chair with me, (or not,) the fact is I do enjoy communicating with you
all in the chats. They are our way of making sure you all like what we
are doing. They also allow me to find out what is happening with all of
you, which is something I very much enjoy.
The
statue of John, I feel to be truly inspiring! Just what we the board, and
you all, all of us as the team wanted it to be. I know my brother is somewhere,
very very pleased about this. I know in my heart, that years from now,
children from all over the world, are going to come to the "Windstar Land"
and look at this statue, and be inspired. Inspired to learn about the man,
what he sang and cared about. There is no way that this won't happen I
assure you! What a glorious thing to be a part of. To be given the ability
to inspire good from a distance, both now, and in the future. We won't
even have to be there, and yet, this will happen, this I know to be true.
We will not only be able to reach children, but men and women also, how
incredible, how wonderful. This we, all of us will make happen!
I
can't tell you how excited I am about what is going on with Windstar. What
we are all making happen. I am so thankful all of you are continuing in
your support of Windstar. I hope to be back in the full swing of things
very soon now. For I know the need for us to continue this work is even
greater now than before. If you just look around you all know this is true,
"The Job Is Not Finished!" It is up to us to grow and keep the fight going.
We must continue our work, for this, the Windstar Foundation is very much
my brother John's legacy, and I truly feel the work John and Tom started
those many years ago must continue for the "environmental sustainability
of our planet!"
I
must go now for I am running out of steam and feel like I may have rambled
at the start of my letter. I just wanted very much to thank all of you
and let you know some of why I have been out of touch. I can't possibly
tell you in words what your continued support of the Windstar Foundation
means to my family and me. May God Bless You and Yours As He Has Blessed
Me In Allowing Me To Work With And Know You!
