David Hasselhoff: News 1999

16 Nov 99 LOS ANGELES - "Baywatch Hawaii" will be back for another season but David Hasselhoff will not be donning his Speedos for the return. The longtime "Baywatch" star has finally made official what he had been hinting at for months - that after 10 years he would be leaving his starring role in the successful series following the current season. At the same time, he is announcing plans to star in a new syndicated series called "AKA Picasso," which could arrive by next fall if the pieces come together. Hasselhoff has been talking about his desire to spend more time with his kids and his intention to pursue other career directions for quite a while, often hinting but never outright saying that the "Baywatch" demands were just too great for this point in his life. Hasselhoff will continue in his role as one of the show's executive producers, but even his off-screen role will be greatly diminished. Hasselhoff says he's enjoyed living in Oahu for this past season's "Baywatch Hawaii," but thought it was time to get back to the mainland and settle into family life.

5 Nov 99 HOLLYWOOD (Variety) -- "Baywatch" star David Hasselhoff will soon no longer be saving lives on the world's most popular TV show.
Hasselhoff has quit his starring role as a hunky lifeguard in the long-running show to star as a debonair sophisticate in "AKA Picasso," which will debut in syndication in fall 2000.
He will continue to executive produce "Baywatch" and make recurring appearances, but he will hand over the beach house keys to Jason Brooks ("Days of Our Lives"), who debuted in the series this year and will now play its "pivotal character," the show's producer, Pearson Television said.
"Baywatch" premiered on NBC during the 1989-90 season with Hasselhoff starring as Malibu's top lifeguard. The network declined to renew the series for a second season. After nine seasons, the series was transformed into "Baywatch Hawaii" and is currently shooting in Oahu.

7 Apr 99 Yup. It's official! We're filming in Hawaii next year. We'll be taking over the old soundstage they used for Hawaii 5-O, and building a tank for the underwater shots. I'm really excited about this - this is going to give the show so much to work with in the new season, from cool new cast to some incredible new locations and scenery. I am one happy Baymarketer!

4 Mar 99 `Baywatch' Irks Australian Town
Wednesday, February 24, 1999 (08:29 PM EST)
SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- Citizens of a beachfront Sydney suburb don't mind seeing ``Baywatch'' on their TV screens. It's seeing the show filmed on their beach that bothers many of them. After a rowdy meeting in Avalon Beach with opponents of the ``Baywatch'' filming, producer Greg Bonnan on Thursday considered invitations from other Australian coastal towns that have welcomed the chance to put their beach on TV screens worldwide. Producers say the highly popular ``Baywatch'' is seen each week in more than 100 countries. It stars executive producer David Hasselhoff and a brigade of red swimsuit-clad lifeguards. On Wednesday, Bonnan attended a public meeting in the north Sydney suburb, with some of the 1,700 people who attended shouting, ``Don't come here, leave us alone!'' and ``We don't want you here!'' A fifth of the town's population turned out for the meeting, which appeared to split the community between younger ``Baywatch'' fans and older people who resent the invasion of privacy and inconvenience that film production inevitably brings. More than two-thirds of those attending the meeting opposed ``Baywatch'' setting up at their small surf club. Bonnan and Hasselhoff first proposed moving the show from Los Angeles to Australia when they filmed two episodes of ``Baywatch'' Down Under at Avalon Beach in October. But members of the community revolted when security guards blocked off part of the beach and banned a surfer from the area. ``I am sorry. We intend to change those things,'' Bonnan said. ``We will not get in your way.'' Bonnan said his show would not only bring economic and tourism benefits to Avalon and the greater Sydney area but would help demonstrate how to use Australia's beaches safely.

28 Feb 99 Qld Minister to meet Baywatch producers
Friday 26 February, 1999 (6:54 AM AEDT)
Queensland's Tourism Minister Bob Gibbs will have talks with the producer of the American-made Baywatch television program today. Baywatch executives met the chairman of the Queensland Tourist and Travel Corporation earlier this week to discuss filming some episodes on Gold Coast beaches. Arts Minister Matt Foley also met the producers in Los Angeles last week. The Baywatch producers are also considering Wollongong and Coffs Harbour as possible locations after residents of the northern Sydney beach of Avalon demonstrated against proposals for the program to be filmed on their beaches.

South Australia joins in Baywatch madness
Friday 26 February, 1999 (10:52 AM AEST)
South Australia is putting in a bid to become the location for the popular, but now controversial, American series, Baywatch. Producers of the program have been snubbed by residents of the Sydney beachside suburb of Avalon. While talks are now being held with Queensland and other Sydney locations, South Australia's Tourism Minister Joan Hall says discussions with the Australian Tourism Commission (ATC) start today to suggest the State. Mrs Hall says no financial incentives have yet been considered to make the bid more attractive, nor has a specific beach been chosen. "The case that we will be putting to the ATC says that we have sensational sun, surf and sand," Mrs Hall said. "We have turquoise seas, blue skies, perfect weather, friendly people - we've got dolphins, diving, yachts, cruisers. We will certainly rival Malibu anyday."

Baywatch poised for Queensland shoot
Friday 26 February, 1999 (2:52 PM AEST)
The multimillion dollar television series Baywatch is almost certain to go to Queensland's Gold Coast. Tourism Minister Bob Gibbs says Queensland has won an in-principle agreement to film Baywatch on the Gold Coast after he met producers this morning. The producers began looking for another location after they were snubbed by residents of the Sydney beachside suburb of Avalon. Mr Gibbs says he is confident a contract will be finalised over the weekend and formally signed early next week. "They're here for the long haul, that was made very clear this morning - that they're looking at hopefully extending the program now and keeping it going for at least another five years," Mr Gibbs said. "It needed a revamp to get the ratings back up - they believe the ideal location to do that is here in Queensland. "You'll be seeing, of course, all the traditional features of Baywatch, that is the rescue boats, the staff," he said.

Wollongong now in running for Baywatch
Thursday 25 February, 1999 (6:34 PM AEDT)
Wollongong is in the running to attract the making of the world's most watched television show Baywatch to its shores.
The city's beaches are competing against the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour and the island of Oahu in Hawaii, to lure the show from Avalon beach in Sydney, following strong opposition from local residents. The executive producer of Baywatch, Greg Bonamm, surveyed Wollongong by helicopter this morning. Mr Bonamm says the whole coastline is spectacular but some work would have to go into infrastructure support. "The infrastructure of a warehouse and offices and the things we need to support the show need to be worked out because that stuff doesn't exist as it is here - but we could create it," he said.
