David Hasselhoff: News 1995

30 Oct 95 PEOPLE Online: Life's still a beach
Baywatch's David Hasselhoff hopes to trade his TV career for films. Someday. "I need to do it right, or I'll be running down a beach in slow motion 20 years from now", says Hasselhoff, 43. His new spin-off series Baywatch Nights beefs up his lifeguard into a part-time private eye, but Hasselhoff admits he can't top--or stop--the popularity of Baywatch, now in its sixth season. "Seven years is a good number", says Hasselhoff, already looking ahead to 1997. "Every time I say that, I get a substantial raise". It would be hard, he admits, to leave a series that gave him international fame. "My face opens the door practically anywhere--I get the best table in the restaurant", he says. Is there a downside? Yes, says Hasselhoff. "Then everybody watches you eat".

Few who sojourn on the Baywatch beach would kick sand on David Hasselhoff. But between 1982-86, when he played crime-buster Michael Knight on Knight Rider, the producers turned into bullies. "They told me, `You have a fat face'", he says. "They were right. I was a party kid. I didn't think about diet or working out". Aided by trainer Heinz Altieri, who prescribed intensive aerobics and weight training, Hasselhoff, sweated off 15pounds--and the rest is history. "I'm in better shape than Iwas in my 20s", says the brains behind Baywatch, "and it's all muscle". Each morning at 4:45, while his wife, Baywatch costar Pamela Bach, and daughters Taylor-Ann, 5, and Hayley Amber, 3, are still asleep in their Sherman Oaks, California, home, he heads for the gym. Throughout the day, he wedges in 300 sit-ups. Even phone time isn't free: Hasselhoff is simultaneously logging hand-curls. "Why not?" he asks. Indeed, such perpetual motion seems a small price, considering the payoff: The producers of Baywatch recently struck a reported three-year, $40 million syndication deal with the USANetwork. Not that he's always camera ready. "I'll pump up with weights before a swimsuit scene," he says. "I've built a good muscle base. If you give me 20 minutes, the muscles willrespond." His 6'4", 195-lb. frame, which he maintains with a fruit-laden diet and the nutritional supplement Met-Rx, is almost perfect: "His legs lack bulk," says Altieri. "But that's genetic".

British newspapers say the Duchess of York, estranged wife of Queen Elizabeth II's second son, Prince Andrew, has been offered a role in a celebrity episode of the popular U.S. television series "Baywatch". "A script has been prepared for her, and she has already had talks with the show's hunky male lead and director David Hasselhoff", the Daily Star tabloid says. The flame-haired duchess, popularly known as "Fergie", married Prince Andrew in 1986, and the couple separated in 1992. They have two young daughters.
