David Hasselhoff: News 2001

30 Nov 2001 Baywatch's Bit Of Berlin Wall (WENN, 11/20/2001)
The cast of the now defunct Baywatch all have a piece of what was the Berlin wall - thanks to David Hasselhoff's performance at the site in 1989. The actor has been a hugely popular singer in Germany since the late 1980s, and became the first American in 45 years to actually perform on the Berlin Wall on New Year's Eve 1989. And he made sure the trip was memorable by inviting pals to join him in chipping away sections of the wall. He recalls, "I had told my old high school buddies to come and share the moment with me. We had hammers, and we ended up chopping down the wall until four in the morning. I gave it to my crew on Baywatch with a plaque that said, 'A little piece of freedom from David Hasselhoff.'"

Baywatch Reunion Goes Belly-up (WENN, 10/18/2001)
The planned Baywatch movie is close to drowning in paperwork with money arguments between stars blighting the plans. Scheduled to begin filming this week in Hawaii, the Fox TV pic - tentatively titled Baywatch Blast - has been pushed back to next spring, if it happens at all. A Fox spokesperson blames the delay on the events of September 11th, saying, "The special deals the production company had with the airlines and the hotels couldn't be fulfilled because of what happened." However, a source tells TV Guide Online many actors refused to sign on the dotted line after they learned that David Hasselhoff - the franchise's executive producer and star - offered special contracts to some of Baywatch's more popular faces. "There were three payment tiers," reveals the insider. "The top was reserved just for him, and there was a middle tier for Pam Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Gena Lee Nolin, David Chokachi, Erika Eleniak and Nicole Eggert." Hasselhoff's explanation is simpler. He says, "We had 25 castmembers on our wish list, but then the budget was way too big. So now I'm trying to get the big girls like Pamela and Yasmine to come back and go to work where we gave them their start."

David Hasselhoff Saved By Whale (WENN, 10/8/2001)
The new Baywatch movie will have lifeguard Mitch Buchannon back from the dead - thanks to a whale. In the final episode of the famous TV series Buchannon, played by David Hasselhoff, was killed in an underwater explosion. But in the forthcoming movie, fans learn that Buchannon never actually died, instead he was saved by a migrating whale who takes him to a desert island. Former cast members including Gena Lee Nolin and Carmen Electra will resurface to visit Buchannon when he returns back to civilization.

Princess Diana's Butler Accused Of Theft (WENN 08/17/2001)
Princess Diana's former butler has been charged with stealing hundreds of items from her family - including gifts from Michael Jackson and David Hasselhoff. An autographed card from the Baywatch star and a signed CD from the King of Pop are among 342 objects, police believe butler Paul Burrell may have swiped. The 43-year-old, called "my rock" by the British royal before her death in a car crash, will appear in court today. Photos of Diana's sons Princes William and Harry with supermodels Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington are also on the missing list, as is a letter from Mother Teresa. The former butler, who was responsible for compiling an inventory of Diana's possessions following the August 1997 tragedy, denies all the charges and claims the items were gifts.

Knight To Ride Again?
David Hasselhoff told SCI FI Wire that his pre-Baywatch character, Michael Knight, may return to television in a new Knight Rider series. Tentatively titled Super Knight Rider 3000, according to the Internet Movie Database, Hasselhoff said in an interview, "Knight Rider's coming along great. We're very, very close to putting the whole deal together."
Hasselhoff declined to detail how K.I.T.T. or any other elements of the show might be updated with modern special effects technology. "We have not gotten to that point yet, but we're just about to close negotiations with a major studio, and I really can't talk about it. I don't want to jinx it." The original Knight Rider debuted in 1982 and spawned a 1991 TV movie, also starring Hasselhoff.

20 Oct 2001 RADNOR, Pa. (AP) - David Hasselhoff is having trouble assembling the cast for his planned ``Baywatch'' reunion movie, tentatively titled ``Baywatch Blast.'' The TV movie being planned to launch a new Fox network series was initially scheduled to begin filming this week in Hawaii, but it has been pushed back to spring, TV Guide Online reported Tuesday. ``We (had) 25 cast members on our wish list, but then the budget was way too big,'' Hasselhoff told TV Guide Online. ``So, now I'm trying to get the big girls like Pamela (Anderson) and Yasmine (Bleeth) to come back and work where we gave them their start.'' A network representative said the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 caused problems with the movie. Special deals with airlines and hotels fell through because of the attacks, the representative said, and cast members didn't want leave the continental United States.

21 Aug 2001 Fox Sets "Baywatch" TV Movie
By Tim Ryan
HONOLULU (Variety) - "Baywatch" is rolling back onto Hawaii's shores.
The decade-old lifeguard drama, canceled in February for poor ratings after relocating here in 1998 under the moniker ''Baywatch Hawaii,'' is being resuscitated as a two-hour TV movie to air during February sweeps on Fox Television.
"Baywatch Blast" stars many of the latest and original cast members, including the show's most visible actor David Hasselhoff, who left the show in its first Hawaii season.
Production officials said the $5.5 million production will shoot on Oahu during October followed by filming in Los Angeles.
Original cast members so far scheduled to appear include Alexandra Paul, Gena Lee Nolin, Nicole Eggert, Yasmine Bleeth, Donna D'Errico, Traci Bingham and Carmen Electra. Pamela Anderson has not confirmed whether she will appear, said Doug Schwartz, executive producer and writer of the TV movie.
``Baywatch Hawaii'' cast members will include Michael Bergin, Jason Brooks and local actor Stacey Kamano.
Schwartz said the storyline is still being developed.

CAN HOLLYWOOD be wooed by Taittinger Champagne, 300-thread sheets and the scent of 30,000 roses? Looks to be so - what with the elite turnout that found itself "Hummered" (that is, chauffeured in Hummers rather than limos) to the new St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort & Spa in Dana Point.
The aromatic, $240 million Tuscan-type resort is the first ever at the seaside for the St. Regis chain. And who, more fitting, than David Hasselhoff to christen the opening? He brought his family. "This place is so unpretentious. You can relax and not be recognized," said David. But he was recognized plenty on the beach, as local lifeguards begged for photos and autographs.
And it is in Dana Point that David will film a "Baywatch" reunion with 25 former cast members. He hopes to present it for February sweeps.

18 Jun 2001 Week of June 11, 2001
David Hasselhoff is trying to relaunch Knight Rider, the '80s series that made him a star. Hasselhoff plans to reprise his role as Michael Knight--but this time as an adviser to two youngsters who set about fighting crime with a high-tech talking Trans Am. Hasselhoff hopes to get William Daniels to return as the voice of K.I.T.T., the motormouth car. The syndicated TV project, which may also involve an animated spinoff, is still in development.

KNIGHT'S TALE The sun has set on Baywatch, but David Hasselhoff is revving up another TV comeback with a new version of his '80s talking-car series Knight Rider. (Two '90s series revivals stalled.) "We're taking it way into the future with my character, Michael Knight, coming out of retirement and hiring a couple of young kids," says the former Baywatch head lifeguard. "I'll be the older, cool boss who oversees this incredibly updated car." Hasselhoff thinks now might be the Knight time: There's an animated version under discussion, and merchandising interest from toy companies. Screen Actors Guild president William Daniels, who provided KITT the car's original voice, is apparently on board. "I had breakfast with KITT, and he said, 'I'd love to come back, Michael,'" says Hasselhoff. "So the president gave me his word. It's going to happen." - William Keck

23 May 2001 HASSELHOFF Aware of 'Baywatch' Fame
Wednesday May 23 3:06 PM ET

NEW YORK (AP) - David Hasselhoff is fully aware of the international cult status ``Baywatch'' enjoys. ''`Baywatch''' is more like a brand name that will probably constantly be made fun of for the rest of the millennium,'' Hasselhoff said, laughing. ``Somebody once said all the other countries in the world look at America like the biggest lifeguard in the world. ... America will stop Saddam Hussein (news - web sites). America will stop terrorism.''
The 48-year-old actor says the syndicated lifeguard drama fell apart after he left last year. Hasselhoff starred as Mitch Bucannon from the show's start in 1989 and appeared in the mid-'90s detective spinoff ``Baywatch Nights.''
''`Baywatch' really was me, not just because I was in it, but I was really instrumental in trying to keep the stories focused,'' he said. ``We watch the reruns and they're excellent, and I mean, we all took a lot of heat but they're really great family entertainment.''

26 Feb 2001 HASSELHOFF BIDS BAYWATCH FAREWELL
Wednesday, February 21, 2001

The axing of Baywatch Hawaii marks the end of an 11-year era in flash and jiggle TV, but DAVID HASSELHOFF - who played founding lifeguard Mitch Buchannon - doesn't seem awfully sad to see the series retiring its life preserver.
"The last two years were not really the true Baywatch," he tells TV Guide Online. "In a way, it's kind of flattery that the show was cancelled because when I left, the ratings went down. And in another way, I'm disheartened because [as a producer] I was making a lot of money with the show going. Some lady summed it up for me while I was out shopping for my daughter on Valentine's Day. She goes, 'Well, that'll teach you to leave the show, huh? They cancelled it!' I just laughed my ass off; that was the funniest compliment I've ever gotten in my life
."
"Baywatch had something for everybody." Hasselhoff continues. "It had a lot of big action for the young kids, and the babes for the guys. But the funny thing is, the number one audience - and this is on record - was women 18-49. And the number one reason they watched the show was for David Hasselhoff. I love that! So when I left, the show went off. I was very proud of that. I hope they'll all come with me to my next franchise.
"
Clearly a businessman at heart, Hasselhoff has his fingers in several potentially lucrative pots. Even as he chats with TV Guide Online via cell phone, he's in his car en route to a Spanish lesson - the ambitious actor-singer intends to exploit the current Latin craze by learning to roll his r's for an upcoming Spanish-language album. He's also developing plans to resurrect his old Knight Rider series (about a secret agent who drives a talking car) in a two hour TV movie. And Hasselhoff says those who missed his recent Broadway stint as the tragic lead in Jekyll & Hyde can catch it on pay-per-view on the Broadway Television Network on March 10.
"They filmed five nights," he reveals, "but they used 99 percent of one Saturday night show. The reason they used a little bit from another show is that my wig actually came off during that performance!" Bloopers aside, Hasselhoff insists, "Anybody who's ever really wondered what Broadway is, this is [it] in its truest form. It's not like Annie Get Your Gun, where it's all rip-roarin' numbers and all happy, it's very moving."

After Decade-Long Run, 'Baywatch' Finally Wipes Out

By Melissa Grego

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Say bye-bye to the "Baywatch" babes.
The buff lifeguards of the long-running TV franchise are about to hang up their skimpy costumes for good, because the show cannot stay afloat in the competitive
marketplace, its syndicator announced Wednesday.
The series dates back more than a decade, when the weekly action hour, starring David Hasselhoff, debuted as a series on NBC, and then launched in syndication, eventually airing in more than 100 countries.
Although the franchise has been revamped and was redubbed "baywatch Hawaii" last season, the changes have not been enough. The show earned a lifeless 1.9 national household rating for the week ending Jan. 28, according to Nielsen.
The show has simply run its course, said Brian Harris, president and CEO of Pearson Television North America, the show's producer.
"The economics associated with bringing the program back could not be justified", Harris said. "It has been an amazing success story, but over last couple of years, one wouldn't have been surprised with this announcement. This is a logical and natural end to the show".
