our philosophy

        We collect and preserve biological material sampled from marine mammals stranded along the Italian coasts of the Mediterranean Sea, in cooperation with the Italian National Stranding Network (Centro Studi Cetacei ONLUS, Associazione Italiana per lo studio dei cetacei e dei rettili marini) and with the help of the University of Padua and the Italian Central Institute for Applied Marine Research (I.C.R.A.M., Roma).

        The Mediterranean Marine Mammals Tissue Bank aims at gathering information related to several questions about marine mammals biology, genetics, anatomy, physiology, pathology and ethology that are still unanswered.

        The bank also aims at conserving and protecting cetaceans and pinnipeds living in the Mediterranean Sea by increasing the general knowledge on their biology and environment.

        The Mediterranean Marine Mammals Tissue Bank collects, catalogues, preserves and distributes fixed tissues, free of charge and upon motivated request. Furthermore the bank offers additional services such as slide histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, diagnostic pathology, necropsy parasite determination, general info and bibliography on marine mammals.

        The Mediterranean Marine Mammals Tissue Bank promotes cultural activities and knowledge on marine mammals biology and environment.
