Sambenedettoradio was born in 1945 for initiative of local shipowners,
above all of Sambenedettese merchant marine, thriving and full expansion
in those years. It was inaugurated in the summer of 1949. It was the
first coastal radio station to be opened in Italy in the postwar period
and Mr. Serafino Romani was the first operator. The radio station was in
the north-west of the old football field “F.lli Ballarin”, in Morosini
street, one hundred meters from the sea, in a small brick cottage with
only one room for all radio equipments........
The radio
station was controlled by an ex R/T operator of the Italian Royal Navy
Mr. Eliseo Bianco, a man of great technical ability, pioneer in the
maritime communications sector on behalf of the S.I.R.M. (Society
Italian Maritime Radio). The station was operated 24 hours at day, it
regulary transmitted meteo bulletins for supporting a safety
navigation in the Adriatic Sea, a guarantee for all sailors in those
years. The R/T Eliseo Bianco was helped from an operational staff
composed of Mr. Giuseppe Mosca (today I6TIH), Mr. Serafino Romani and
Mr. Nereo Gropaiz.......

Sambenedettoradio was a support point for all shipowners, especially for
those involved with oceanic fish. This radio station frequently
transmitted to unthinkable distances reaching ships in the Alantic Ocean
during night time using Amplitude Modulation…. really extraordinary.

In 1965 the
Italian Government stopped S.I.R.M. (Society Italian Maritime Radio)
financing and a lot coastal stations were closed. Only few radio
stations remained operational, the most important between the main
italian fishing harbours is San Benedetto del Tronto better known as
SAMBENEDETTORADIO (IQP)

it was famous
for its first Italian fishing-boats and for its presence in the Atlantic
Ocean, so Sambenedettoradio remained opened and passed under the control
of the Italian Post and Telecommunications Office (Ministero delle Poste
e delle Telecomunicazioni), the small and romantic coastal radio
station, built on the beach near the harbour, was transferred into a new
building of the PP.TT. (Ministero delle Poste e delle Telecomunicazioni) located
in the center of the city.

THE NEW BUILDING
WHERE SAMBENEDETTORADIO - IQP |
WAS TRANSFERRED
IN
1962 TO THE SECOND FLOOR |
Here the
receiving and transmitting equipments were systemaized. I remember the
enormous pylon on the stable summit and the long aerials on each
quadrant. After some years the transmitter was set in Grottammare two km
for from San Benedetto del Tronto, in the Montesecco area (on the top of
a hill) about 150 mt. slm. IQP.
Sambenedettoradio has been for half of a century a reference point in
the Adriatic sea for the whole local merchant marine and for all the
ships that transited in this area till the advent of cellular phone
which upset everything and everybody.
