Charles Francois de Cisternay  Du Fay   1698 - 1739

strofinando la resina

strofinando il vetro

About 1736, Charles Francois du Fay of France, learned that rubbing glass and rubbing resinous substances seemed to produce charges of different kinds.
He found that two charges of the same kind repel each other, while two of unlike kinds attract. Please see the animations.
He suggested therefore that electricity may exist as two kinds which he named "vitreous" and "resinous".
All seemed to indicate that two kinds of electricity might exist. Each seemed to repel others of the same kind and attract their opposites.
Du Fay never spoke of electricity as a "fluid". Was the Abbè Nollet to suggest the concept of electricity as a fluid.
