No observation, even the most rigorous, can
recall the essence of a land.
Exploratory exercises and systematic descriptions produce information and
knowledge useful to the lay out of a complete and detailed thematic atlas,
but they do no reconstruct the identity of a place.
The artist, unlike scientists, instead is a "person who sees" and that
tries to "intuitively appropriate" reality so to "put the visible in
order" and organize his experience. Only the artist can in fact reveal,
with the devices of the imaginary, the inner most essence of a land.
In 1953, Roberto Rossellini films "Viaggio in Italia", with the
photography of Enzo Serafin. In the film, the phlegraean landscape
accompanies the main character's "wandering" and unveils, with mechanisms
of loss and hope, the restless psychology. Giorgio Caproni (The passage of
Aeneas, 1954), in telling about an ancient wayfarer, captures the profound
sense of a "landscape of serum":
In recent years the poet Michele Sovente (Cumae,
Finally the painter's eyes that embrace the becoming that reveals itself,
that "makes the landscape stop in the turning of the moment, to extract
the essence, among alchemy and witchcraft".
In the works of Guglielmo Longobardo "the
enigma of the place represented is in some way the enigma of the
relationship that ties our subjectivity to the scope of the world" (V.Corbi).
Augusto Massa "takes part with discreet touches
and light and allusive gestures (that) design a prolific universe, upon
which the unpredictable impression of unknown and primary realities is
imprinted, that speak through the letters and the hieroglyphics of a
mysterious alphabet" (A. Trione).
Giuseppe Massa creates an itinerary of visual
reflections on the physical-figurative events of the Phlegraean territory,
where “that tormenting sense of the landscape as knowledge, history, or as
poetic workings of the memory” lives (F. Abbate).
Ernesto Salemme in the theatrical and lyrical
prose "Bacoli muta" that is centred on the contraposition between mythical
past and "desolate" present of Bacoli, tries to give voice to "a land
deprived of dream and of plans" that would like to wake up again from
centuries old torpor...
sembrare quasi assente, disanimata, profondamente malata. Bella dicevano
di me, ma troppo rilassata, come perduta. Io rispondevo col respiro
