Report from the US WILPF Congress
Joyce McLean
Dear Sisters,
200 women attended and were inspired, by each other, and the program of the triennial US WILPF Congress.
There were outstanding panels and discussion on all aspects of US policy in the Mid East from oil, the tragedies of civilian killings, the oppressive occupation and the special responsibilty of US Jews.
Panels and workshops on Racial Justice reminded us all of the underlying racism of US policies home and abroad.
There were excellent trainings on meeting facilitation, media work, direct action and organizing...giving us the opportunity to improve our leadership skills.
The interconnections of our 4 major campaigns, Dismantling the Industrial/War Machine, Challenging Corporate Power/Asserting the People's Rights, Ending the Cuban Embargo, and Uniting for Racial Justice were made again and again.
Other sessions dealt with some of our other interconnected issues: the death penalty, Colombia, Civil Liberties and Asia/Pacific.
We also laughed, sang, exchanged stories, performed and watched theater.
As all of you well know, the unjust and immoral actions of the US government affect the life of the entire world's peoples and the sustainabilty of the very planet. US WILPF has much to struggle against and creatively change.
This meeting recharged our 'batteries' and sent us home more dedicated than ever to our work and to the WILPF organization.
Peace to You All, Joyce McLean, IEC Member US Section
