Order PSITTACIFORMES |
Order PSITTACIFORMES:
Family PSITTACIDAE:
Palate desmognathous; rostrum movable by a hinge-like
articulation with the skull; orbital ring of bone usually complete; feet
prehensile, zygodactyl; tarsus with small granular scales or papillae;
tongue thick, fleshy with strong musculature and many sensory papillae,
or brush-tipped in the lories; crop present; nares holorhinal, impervious;
no expansor secundariorum; carotids usually two, but variable (only left
carotid in Cacatua); flexor tendons Type 1; pelvic muscles AXY+; sternum
fenestrated or indented; diastataxic; no caeca; oil gland tufted (absent
in macaws); furcula weak or absent; syrinx with three pairs of intrinsic
muscles; 13-15 cervical vertebrae, usually 14; 10 primaries (except the
flightless Kakapo (Strigops) with 9); 10-14 secondaries; usually 12 rectrices
(14 in Oreopsittacus); aftershaft present; down over entire body, except
the neck in many species; powder downs present.
Most parrots eat seeds and fruits; the lories
and lorikeets feed on pollen, nectar and soft fruits. The pygmy parrots,
which forage on tree trunks like woodpeckers, may include small fungi in
their diet and the large Australian cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus) include
insect larvae. Other species also eat insects in addition to seeds
and fruits.
All parrots nest in holes; most in cavities
in trees or holes in banks or rock crevices; some (e.g., some species of
pygmy parrots) in holes they excavate in termitaria. A few species
excavate holes in trees (e.g., Cyclopsitta diophthalma). Monk Parrots
build a huge communal nest of twigs and dead branches in which each pair
has its own nest chamber. All parrots lay white eggs; clutch sizes
vary from 2-5 in larger species, up to 8 in small species. Incubation
begins with the first or second egg and in most species is by the female
who is fed by the male; males of some species also incubate. Duration
of incubation varies with the size of the bird, from 17-23 days in small
species up to 5 weeks for the large macaws. Newly-hatched young are
blind and naked or with sparse dorsal down which is white in most species,
yellow in some cockatoos, pink in Eolophus and dark gray in Pezoporus.
The eyes open 1-2 weeks after hatching. In most species the white
down is replaced by a dense, gray down followed by the development of feathers.
Hatchlings are brooded by the female who is fed by the male; after several
days the male feeds the young directly. Young birds remain in the
nest for 3-4 weeks in small species up to 3-4 months in the large macaws;
fledglings are fed by the parents for varying periods after leaving the
nest.
Longevity probably up to 30 years in the wild; an African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) I recall seeing in the London Zoo in 1954 was known to be ca. 100 years old at death; it had outlived three generations of its human owners.
