  • While AOR radio played it safe in the '80s, courting an older audience that radio advertisers love, the post-punk underground was nurtured by college radio and edgier commercial stations such as WFNX in Boston and 91X in San Diego.

  • "If you talk to Kevin Weatherly or Oedipus [at WBCN in Boston], we all kind of miss those days, " says Jim McGuinn, who was program director at WEQX before Nirvana broke.

  • Proponents of consolidation argue that, once the dust has settled, there will actually be more diversity because CBS is going to make certain its eight stations in Boston are all different from one another.
