A Taste of Irish
Folk Music
The recent rediscovery of traditional
music is regarded to as a major achievement for the whole of Irish cultural
flourishing; far from the stereotype representing fiddle players wearing woolen
caps and playing in smoky pubs, apart from the misleading trend of commercial
elaborations merging Celtic reminiscences with new age or pagan genders, the
liveliness and fascination of Irish music is simply outstanding.
Charming vocalists such as Dolores Keane, Luke Kelly and Maura O'Connell, together
with the perfect synthesis of tradition and research performed by such groups as
The Dubliners, The Chieftains, Planxty and many others, represent a sample of
the amazing variety provided to all fond lovers of the Green Island.
Not really a few words, not even some pages but maybe a lifetime would hardly be
sufficient to explore the fascinating universe of Irish musical tradition and
culture; let's just say that continuous innovation is being developed as well
thanks to those artists (The Pogues and Stockton's Wing are the first names one may
recall) whose efforts are constantly dedicated to the blending of vital
heritages from the tradition with up-to-date suggestions from rock and
metropolitan music.
