The new generation of major crash vehicles in service today couples a high quantity of extinguishing
agents carried with brillant performances and two
high-performance ARFF vehicles
alone could give a sufficient coverage. However
the Ministero dell'Interno has issued more
stringent directives aimed at preventing the reduction to a lower ICAO Category of the airport fire
service in case of vehicle breakdowns. Therefore, three more
major crash tenders
and two
Rapid Intervention Vehicles
are available. These additional vehicles also offer an increased safety level when larger
aircraft visit the airport during training or charter flights.
Moreover, as a consequence of the airport terminal fire that killed 17 people in Düsseldorf
(Germany) on April 11 1996, in 1997 the
Ministero dell'Interno has required the deployment of a
structural fire engine
at all Italian airports.
The range of vehicles available at the fire station is completed by a support vehicle, the
ASA, and a light off-road vehicle, the
Fiat Campagnola (CA), equipped with light rescue tools.
