  • The pieces of Shaturanga were represented viz.: Infantry - 4 Pawns which moved as pawns do in Chess Boatmen - A ship which could only move 2 squares diagonally but could jump over intervening pieces Cavalry - A horse which could move like a Knight in Chess Elephant - An elephant which could move like a Rook in Chess Rajah - A human figure which could move like a King in Chess The game started with the four armies in each of the four corners, in a double row, like Chess, the four main pieces behind the four pawns

  • Other than the fact that it was a game for four players, the other main difference was the use of dice to decide which piece moved each turn

  • Other changes happened at the same time - the merging of the allied armies into a single army making the game a two player form and duplicating the pieces, both developments which have survived until today

  • Unfortunately, instead of two Prime Ministers, the set contained two Queens with enhanced powers, making them the most powerful pieces on the board

  • The pieces are shown on a non-chequered board in a virtually identical pattern to that of today

  • In other words, Cannons capture by hoping over a second piece in order to capture a third piece

  • All pieces can remove opponent's pieces by landing on the space they occupy

  • One player controls the white pieces and the other player controls the black pieces; the player that controls white is always the first player to move

    Ancient Chess History Unearthed
From the BBC, a team of British archaeologists have found evidence that Europeans
were playing chess as early as the sixth century.

  • Other pieces were found as far afield as southern Italy

    Music and Chess
An annotated bibliography of musical compositions related to chess.

  • Connections between Music and Chess by John Greschak July 22, 1998 - June 7, 2006 Musical Compositions Related to Chess This is a list of pieces of music that are related in some way to the game of chess

  • There is no doubt that many of the pieces listed here bear only a distant (or unknown) relationship to chess

  • For example, it is likely that in some cases the only connection is that the word chess was used in the title of the piece

  • A recording of this piano piece is available on the album titled L'Oeuvre pour piano (Alpha DB 57)

  • The moves of the pieces influence the form of the dancing

  • The album consists of 10 pieces that were inspired by chess: White (5:36), Black (5:34), Reflexion (4:33), P-K4 (E4) (4:44), Time Is Up (6:24), Castles (5:18), Inside Your Head (5:02), Sacrifice (4:13), Paranoid Pawn (4:29) and Checkmate (5:43)

    Star Trek Tri-Dimensional Chess
Provides updated rules and interpretation of original rules. Provides sample game

  • And there it was...the original TOS Tri-D chessboard! There lay the original thing: the four 'attack boards', positioned above and below the main boards; the starting positions of the game pieces; some simple suggestions about gameplay...but no real 'rules.' You could dream about playing, but never really play

  • Here follows some bits and pieces about the game, to fairly show you that my rules are a worthwhile product

  • Should we use the revised notation I adopted for the 1992 revision 3.1 Tri-D Chess rules? Better, but that system still falls short of tracking the pieces in a 3D environment

  • Each square has only one name ('a3' or 'b6' would be examples.) While the squares are defined with lower-case letters, the pieces are listed in upper-case, as 'K' for King, and 'N' for Knight

  • In the case of a piece which moves to a square which overlaps another, we must add a number indicating which of the many chessboards it landed on

  • The lowest z-number would be 1, where the chess piece would be moving to an inverted attack board attached under White's main board

  • The highest z-number would be 7, with a piece moving to an upright attack board attached to Black's main board

board set-up, the pieces, strategy, special moves, and how to win.

  • But just so that you can keep it in mind, the piece called the 'king' is the most important piece

  • You can remember this by using the catchy phrase 'Right is white.' Each player has 6 different types of chess pieces: there are 8 pawns, 2 rooks, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 1 queen, and 1 king

  • The pawns are the smallest pieces, and you will recognize them because (duh) there are eight of them

  • The king is the tallest piece and has a cross on top

  • The last piece is the queen, which is the 2nd tallest piece and has a little crown around the top

  • Here's a picture: Now, one player will be the white pieces, and one will be the black pieces

  • That means that you are the white pieces

  • So you'll take your white pieces and set them up as such: Put your rooks on the two outside corners of the first row

  • The queen goes on the first row on the same color box as the color of your pieces

  • So if you are the black pieces, put the queen on the remaining black, in the first row, and put the king on the remaining white square

  • If you are the white pieces, put the queen on the remaining white square and the king on black

    Knight's Move Tessellations
Dan Thomasson looks at tesselations with numerous unexpected shapes traced out
    by knight moves.

  • By putting each pattern on a separate chess board, closing the open pattern to make a geometric shape, and filling in the pattern with the same color as the line path's color, there now exists four pieces that can be connected into one piece, in such a way that it can be tessellated

  • The candle lantern is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece made in a small mountain town in the heart of Mexico

  • After making the above animation, I connected the four symmetrical patterns from the 8x8 square to make a 7x7 square tessellation piece

  • The center square of the 7x7 tessellation piece is actually a gap, as can be seen in the animation

  • Four copies of the 7x7 square shown above on the right, can be connected together in such a way as to make a single larger tessellation piece

  • The center white square of the four combined pieces is also a gap

  • None-the-less, the tiling of the tessellation piece makes for an interesting interlocking chain of red, green, blue, and yellow square links

  • Now we can replicate the larger tessellation piece, and tile the pieces into a work of art that I call the Four Color Chain-Linked Tessellation (derived from Knight's Tour) : (Click image to see a Four Color Chain-Linked Regular Tessellation) Here are a couple other examples of the chain-linked tessellation

    Carrick's Characters, ornamental chess sets
Detailed ornamental sets for play or display.

  • The chess piecesare strong and meant to be used to play chess with

  • The black half of each chess setis made to look like bronze, while the white pieces look likeivory

  • The beautifully detailed chesspieces are hand moulded and finished from the finest ground marbleand resin, to the highest standards possible

  • The top coat of each chess pieceis a hard wearing polish, so a quick buff over with a good qualityspray polish (first sprayed on to a soft cloth) will keep themlooking their best

  • However as we actually manufacturethese sets (and have done since 1986), should a piece get damaged, replacement pieces can be made to order (we do know of one thatwas eaten by a dog and for some reason, no one wanted to use itafter that)

  • The first three are all the same size, the kings being approximately5 inches tall and price is £80 per set, the difference isin the style of the pieces

  • We don't recommend using a smaller sized board as the chess piecestend to look cramped

  • Using a board with large enough squares, means that there is room for you to pick each piece up and moveit easily
