ADHD Treatment Guidelines
Policy statement from the AAP offers standarized guidelines for the treatment of
school aged children...
Other recommendations include that stimulant medications and/or behavior therapy are appropriate and safe treatments for ADHD and that children should have regular and systematic follow-up to monitor goals and possible side effects
Too often, if a child doesn't respond to a medication or continues to have problems, the treatment is stopped and he is left to continue to do poorly at school, have behavior problems and poor relationships with others
Instead, the AAP recommends that 'when the selected management for a child with ADHD has not met target outcomes, clinicians should evaluate the original diagnosis, use of all appropriate treatments, adherence to the treatment plan, and presence of coexisting conditions.' For children with ADHD who continue to have problems with core symptoms, including inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, if medication wasn't part of the initial treatment plan, then a stimulant medication should be considered and behavior therapy should be reinforced
Children who are already on a stimulant medication and are doing poorly, may be changed to a different stimulant medication
Many of the statements and conclusions of this policy statement should be reassuring to parents, including that: review and analysis of several studies have shown that stimulant medications do work for the core symptoms of ADHD and in many cases 'improves the child's ability to follow rules and decreases emotional overactivity, thereby leading to improved relationships with peers and parents.' side effects of stimulant medications are usually 'mild and short lived, ' and for parents that worry about the effects of stimulant medications on their child's growth, that there is 'no significant impairment of height attained' in adult life
Before You Buy
Learn how to save money on your children's prescription medications, including
using generics, splitting...
One thing that many Pediatricians don't know a lot about is how much the medications that they prescribe actually cost
To save money, Pediatricians and parents need to be more mindful of the cost of the medications that are being prescribed and choose less expensive alternatives when possible
Make sure that your child really needs a prescription Antibiotics are one of the most used, and overused medications in children and adults
Asking your Pediatrician for a higher strength of a medication and giving it at a lower dose is one good way to save money
It doesn't work with all medications though
Another commonly used ADHD medication that it does work for though is Ritalin
Three month supply For medications that are used for prolonged periods of time, such as allergy or asthma medications, get a 3 month supply of medication from a mail order pharmacy, which can save you an additional $10 to $15
Ask for samples If you don't have a prescription card and there is no generic available in the medication that is being prescribed, ask if your doctor has samples of the medication
Many doctors are given free samples of commonly used medications by drug representatives

Death from Ritalin: the ADHD Truth
One family's advocacy against stimulant medications for children, following the
death of their son....
In addition, your child needs to, be put on a medication that is a close cousin to amphetamine because of the ADHD labeled
She also went on to tell us that the Methylphenidate (Ritalin) was a very mild medication and would stimulate the brain stem and help Matthew focus
*It is important to note that the schools insistence and role in our son's drugging was documented in a letter written by Monica to the pediatrician stating: "We would have hoped you would have started Matthew on a trial of medication by now"
We had hoped by September you and Matt's parents would have begun a trial of medication so that we could assess whether his learning would have benefited by increased focus and concentration
Matthew supposedly needed this drug Ritalin because of a subjective diagnosis called ADHD until it silenced him forever on March 21, 2000, even sadder I have learned that thousands of children have died as a direct result of using psychotropic medications over the years

Yes, there probably are some individuals who have received medication when some other treatment might have been better
On the other hand, there are probably others who were not been diagnosed for years and could have benefited from medication
Finally, even if someone has attention deficit disorder (ADHD) and is on medication, is it the best medication, dosage and timing? Medication can be quite helpful if prescribed in the right context

For other conditions, psychiatrists who treated children and adolescents had relatively fewer medications that had actually been tested on children
We had to extrapolate from adult data, make do with fewer medications, and base our prescribing practices on less research data
Although medication choices were still more limited than they are today, clinicians still had more information on how the medications affected AD/HD children than they did on how the same medications affected adults

Behavioral Treatment for ADHD: An Overview
Explains using positive reinforcement, rewards or privileges, and negative
consequences to modify...
Despite the well documented benefits of stimulant medication for treating ADHD, medication is no panacea and some children with ADHD should not receive it
First, although medication helps the majority of children with ADHD, as many as 20% derive no real benefit from medication
Second, some children experience side effects that prevent them from receiving medication on an extended basis
Third, many children who benefit from medication still have difficulties with primary ADHD symptoms or associated problems which must be targeted via other means
Fourth, some children with ADHD can have their symptoms managed effectively without medication (this is most likely to be true, however, when symptoms are relatively mild.) In addition to these reasons, some children have extremely strong objections to taking medication - this may be more likely to occur with teenagers
In these circumstances, trying to force medication on a child can create more problems than it solves
Attention Deficit - Hyperactivity Disorder
Guide for parents in understanding and identifying these disorders. Includes what
it is, behaviors,...
The generally accepted treatment in this country is the use of medications
Treatment With Medication: Each medication has its own characteristics, effects and possible side effects
Thus, the physician should review these issues with the parents before beginning any medication
Medications have been used since 1937 and are considered to be safe and effective
These medications do not 'drug' or 'alter the mind' of the child
Rather, research suggests that each medication increases the amount of the chemical that is deficient in the brain, allowing the brain to function normally; therefore, the behaviors are diminished
The current approach is to use one of three groups of medications
Since ADHD can interfere with classroom work, peer interactions and family life, it is recommended that the child be on medication throughout each day, not just during school hours
Group One medications are: Ritalin (methylpenidate) Dexedrine (dextroamphetamine) Cylert (pemoline) Group Two medications are Tofranil (imipramine) Noripane (desipramine) Group Three medications are: Mellaril (thioridazine) Tegretol (carbamazepine) Clonidine may be used with Group One or Two medications to increase their effectiveness

Ritalin - Miracle Drug or Cop-Out?
Republication of an article by Ken Livingston.
Indeed, this probably explains the high levels of 'self-medication' around the world (stimulants like caffeine and nicotine, for example)
In a recent survey of pediatricians, published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine , nearly 50 percent of doctors confess to spending an hour or less with a child before making a diagnosis and prescribing medication (usually Ritalin)
This is particularly significant information to have when prescribing medications, because stimulant drugs actually may be counterproductive for children with certain of these problems
Combine this with the finding by Linda Copeland and her colleagues, reported in 1987 in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics , that most pediatricians do not adequately monitor the medications of their ADHD patients once they have prescribed them and you have a troubling situation indeed
The research suggests that changes in the DSM criteria may have had an effect on the overall numbers of children who are considered to have ADHD, but that doesn't explain why the percentages of children who are diagnosed and put on medication vary from one part of the country to another
