Steam Locomotive type Mikado 4501 of the Southern Railway
In 1911 the « Southern » ordered the construction of 25 locomotives class 2-8-2 from the Baldwin Locomotive Company which already had in 1897 built the first loco with this wheel arrangement for the Japanese Railways. This is the reason for the strange name of Japanese origin « Mikado » which designates this particular wheel arrangement to this Locomotive class.
The Mikado 4501 has a particular story all to it’s own. It hauled for over 40 years, heavy loaded trains across the train lines of Southern US for the « Southern » who owned these locos.
Their existence seemed doomed to end on some secondary line of Kentucky; for then to be scrapped, when a passionate admirer stood up and bought it from Southern.
Overhauled and brought back to pristine condition, with also the cooperation of other railway enthusiasts, the 4501 had its “black” coat replaced with a green livery and lettering in gold, fitting of a locomotive hauling passengers, and since 196 has been put in pressure, and used to haul railway enthusiasts.
The model, in the characteristic colours of the “Southern”, has full working gearings, and front headlamp operational.
