today in history
( a good trampin' fact)
march 13, 2003...... 350,000 year old upright-walking footprints were
found in italy. that's according to the journal Nature......

so, in the spirit of johnny appleseed, we are sprinkling the seeds of

greetings

It's a rainy evening and after I finish my website duties i'm going to
reread some H.P. Lovecraft. there's nothing like the smell of a rare
and moldy book mingled with the wet and chilly air.

before I devote the night to the bookworm within, I wanted to mention a
small fact which has come to my attention. some of you may like to
pre-order trampin'. if you do it can be ordered thru sony. the packaging is
my favorite- the limited edition (all paper). they also have a limited
supply of a lyric pamphlet which I worked on and it's very nice. they
will send it with the album while supplies last. I have checked the sony
price of the album and it's a fair price.
http://www.sonymusicstore.com/store/catalog/MerchandiseDetails.jsp?merchId=70056&sms=267614-92414-alt

this is a consumer service announcement just for pre-order people.
otherwise please disregard it. i wish everyone a good evening, as I
prepare a glass of tea and crack open my first edition of The Mountains of
Madness.

all good wishes

hopefully we all have given unto caesar what
is caesar's and can move on. although paying
taxes does give us a moment to take stock and
consider where our hard earned money is going.

the band and i spent the evening working on new
songs and getting our equipment in order for our
appearance on david letterman. airing friday.
cause for excitement and trepidation. tho i am
optimistic i will remember the lyrics to jubilee.
certainly dave will not notice the difference.
we are posting the lyrics so anyone can keep an eye
on my progress or lack of it.

a last word.  today marks the passing of joey ramone.
he was really a nice person. so may we give him
a good thought and a happy hey ho...

i must be off, time to don my boots and greatcoat
and set out to retrieve my copy of uncle wiggley's
airship that i foolishly left in a phone booth on the
other side of town.

all good wishes

it is a beautiful day in new york city. the
dogwoods are flowering and i am happily
sneezing as i breeze past in search of a
good cup of coffee.

i am gathering research for our site. reading
up on byron and bronte. which brings a thought
to mind. some people have stopped me on the
street (only yards from a coffee pit stop) to
mention they have received these greetings.
but then they ask if we are playing anywhere.
just so you know all that information is in
the http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/10936/02Fh1N6yu sector of our
http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/10765/02Fh1N6yu

these little messages are just me stopping
by. please come and enter our world. we
try to update it every day and it's a lot better
than these little notes.

by the way. coffee is great, but too much
of it, like anything else, should be avoided.
if you are trying to cut down, try thinking of
it as an aesthetic pal instead of a beverage.
i sometimes order a cup in a cafe and just
let it sit there. but i get the pleasure of its
aroma and just having it around.

well, thats about it for now. i have to locate
one of those hav-a-hanks in the deli up ahead.
handkerchiefs, by the way, still make great
birthday gifts and have been popular since
the early sixteenth century.

greetings from Patti Smith

greetings

It's a grey monday morning. A good morning to listen to
Gertrude Pridgett, or Ma Rainey as we know her best, for
today is her birthday. If you are fortunate enough to own
Ma Rainey, Volume 1 and 2, on Riverside Records, it may be
nice to spin Chain Gang Blues or See See Rider. The later
was the last piece of music Allen Ginsberg chose to listen
to before his passing in April of 1997.

I have to admit I'm very excited that trampin' is
coming out tomorrow. I am pleased to say it is also
available on vinyl. A double record. Some of my favorites
albums are double records, like Blonde on Blonde and
Electric Ladyland. I have listened to ours and the
quality is high.

We have a lot of work this week. Posting the remaining
lyrics on the site. TV. Jobs coming up. And now we have
some streaming on the songs. I never heard of it before so
I was kind of suspicious. They're these little
http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/11069/02Gh1N6yu  of
the songs you hear on the computer. I tried it out and they
sound good. You have to have a QuickTime thing. I don't
know where you get it. Maybe it comes free in the computer.
In any event it's probably not analogue. The vinyl is
though and so is Ma Rainey.

Well that's all from the technical perspective. I got to
stop at the hardware store and pick up a phillips screw
driver and an SAE 6-Point Socket Set. The old turntable
needs repairing. Gotta spin some vinyl.
If you get trampin' I hope you like it.

Happy Birthday Ma

Greetings from Patti Smith

Greetings

it's real early and it's raining and lightning out. i can
hear the sanitation trucks in the distance moving through
the rain soaked streets. i haven't written this week
because i smashed my finger playing guitar at the warsaw in
brooklyn. my amp sounded too clean and i got highly
agitated. speaking of clean, mother's day approaches and a
nice gesture may be to gather up all that laundry laying
around and get it done. i prefer doing my own but there is
a a plethora of possibilities. one being to visit mom
with a full load on sunday and show her how much you need
her.  in any event nothing beats the scent of freshly
washed sheets and hardly any accomplishment of mankind is
better than getting all one's socks in order.

i've got to get back to my site work. sunday we will have
something special on our site so come and visit. i will
write more next week when my finger heals. it's my own
fault but when i get a guitar in my hand it brings out my
mean streak. at least i didn't put my foot through the amp
grill like i did to some poor fender twin some time ago. it
had to be retired into a small but attractive coffee table.
speaking of coffee it's stopped raining. there's some real
army issue brewing at the deli. no need for galoshes, i've
got my trusty work boots so i'll be moseying along into
dawn.

wherever your mother may be, in the home or in the heart,
she gave you life if nothing else. give her a good thought
and put on some clean matching socks. for as my mom always
said, you never know when you may have to remove your
shoes.

all good wishes

greetings from Patti Smith

greetings,

This missive is late in coming due to the saga of my
smashed finger. I will spare the gruesome details but the
outcome is a civil war style gauze wrapping and no index
finger usage for a few days. this makes folding laundry
very problematic. i guess there is no chance of me playing
guitar at the http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/10936/02I_1N6yu on May
16, although I
seem to be psychically channeling mass sighs of relief. I'm looking
forward to playing it though. It's our third time. And this time we
are filling in for a Donovan rain date cancellation. Which
just goes to show they are so fond of us they even consider
us a good stand in for Donovan. What a great life.

We have a lot of work coming up and i am happy to report we
broke in 10 of our http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/11069/02I_1N6yu
tunes at the warsaw last week.
the people in brooklyn gave us a great sendoff as we go
trampin' through the world. but not before we hit Hoboken.
Oh another great thing about the festival is we get to hang
out inside the courtroom. Just the band and a few random
little ones looking for the bathroom. We just lounge around
making up our set list, sampling the huge deli tray of cold
cuts, broccoli and dip. Now normally i don't eat cold cuts
and they should not be consumed on a daily basis as they
are filled with preservatives. But i make an exception
here. The cold cuts in Hoboken are a cut above other towns.
we do have to watch for paper airplanes sailing into the
dip and salsa. but street festivals should always be kid
friendly.

well i've got to be off. time to soak my finger in a warm
salt solution. it was cool sharing some of what goes on
behind the scenes at these big festivals. come on down to
Hoboken. it will be fun even without my guitar playing.

well the ole smashed finger saga is about closed,
tho soon to be re-enacted for a made for tv movie
starring judy davis. she was great in naked lunch
and a passage to india. two very good rental movies.
by the way there was a rumor circulating that i was not
typing my own greeting when my finger was wrapped up. this
is an untruth. i had no ghost typist. but everything is back
to normal and by madrid I should be ready for my lonely
stratacaster. so hop on that plane
http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/10936/02K21N6yu should be fun.

patti, you may be thinking, what is this greeting about?
well, i can't say that I know. i could remind you to
register and vote in the upcoming presidential election. if
you need assistance you can go to the
http://gold.sonymusic.com/click/11575/02K21N6yu
on our site. there's a link waiting for you. or i could
simply mention that may 19th is andre the giant's birthday.
let's give him a good thought. maybe you could rent the
princess bride along with naked lunch.
i was exaggerating about the made for tv movie but
everything else i've stated is absolutely true.

all good wishes

I'm writing a bit early as we are heading for Madrid.
We will play the Festimad and certainly spend time
in the Reina Sofia Museum contemplating
http://www.spanisharts.com/reinasofia/picasso/guernica.htm.
For decades we had it right here at MOMA.
One merely mounted the stairs to find it. In 1981
it returned home. It was sad to see it go. It was
a good thing. It is where it should be. In Spain.

i would be amiss if i didn't mention that yesterday was
Bob Dylan's birthday. It's a good day to throw open the
shutters, put on The Times They Are A Changin'
and take those worn, encrusted boots out of the
closet or from under the bed and give them a good
cleaning. There have been times in history when men have
tramped trough the ice and snow, or manned the trenches,
the soles of their shoes nearly gone, young soldiers, under
Washington, Lee or Napoleon with no foot covering at all.
So it is good to show appreciation for our well trodden soles.

So, as we sail off to Spain we send a salute to Bob.
My trusty boots await and when we return I shall
resume my quest for the perfect laces.

all good wishes
