Breve Descrizione: E' il cereale più coltivato al mondo, il fusto è eretto e robusto, le foglie alterne sul fusto con una lamina lunga, i fiori maschili, una volta terminati, formano una pannocchia dai chicchi gialli; può arrivare fino a 4 m. d'altezza. Le infiorescenze femminili sono ascellari che daranno origine alle spighe chiamate volgarmente pannocchie. Le varietà ornamentali sono molte: a grani piccoli, blu scuro, a grani allungati, colorati di giallo, rosso, viola con disegni a mosaico.

Uso: Moltissimi sono gli usi di questa pianta; dall'alimentazione umana a quella animale, per scopi terapeutici, come combustibile per la produzione di energia e per la produzione di materie plastiche. Nella varietà ornamentale i granelli di mais possono avere colori diversi dal tipico giallo ed essere usate per creare delle gradevoli composizioni. Prestare attenzione a non creare ristagni d'acqua dopo le annaffiature. La raccolta deve essere effettuata quando i chicchi cominciano a seccare e non contengono più il succo lattiginoso.
