Breve Descrizione: Pianta erbacea/legnosa di breve durata con un unico capolino terminale dal quale fiorisce una corolla globosa. Le foglie oblungo-lanceolate sono unite a tre a tre, il che dà il nome al genere di questa pianta, appunto Trifolium.

Durata: Annuale o biennale, in alcuni casi perenne.

Area Di Origine: Emisfero Boreale.

Clima: Temperato.

Uso: Coltivabile per scopi ornamentali ma anche per altre importanti caratteristiche. il trifoglio ospita fra le sue radici dei batteri simbionti capaci di fissare l'azoto atmosferico; viene utilizzato di conseguenza nel sistema di rotazione delle colture per migliorare la fertilità del suolo. Molte specie di trifoglio sono notevolmente ricche di proteine e vengono coltivate come foraggio per il bestiame. Il trifoglio (Shamrock) è uno dei simboli non ufficiali dell'Irlanda. Sono molto interessanti le proprietà medicamentose della pianta.

Brief Description: They are small annual, biennial, or short-lived perennial herbaceous plants. The leaves are trifoliate (rarely 5- or 7-foliate), with stipules adnate to the leaf-stalk, and heads or dense spikes of small red, purple, white, or yellow flowers; the small, few-seeded pods are enclosed in the calyx. Other closely related genera often called clovers include Melilotus (sweet clover) and Medicago (alfalfa or 'calvary clover'). The "shamrock" of popular iconography is sometimes considered to be young clover. The scientific name derives from the Latin tres, "three", and folium, "leaf", so called from the characteristic form of the leaf, which has three leaflets (trifoliate); hence the popular name trefoil. Clovers are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera (butterfly and moth) species; see list of Lepidoptera that feed on clovers.

Use: Cultivated for ornamental purposes but also for other important characteristics. Clover hosts between its roots symbiotic bacteria capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen; is used accordingly in the system of crop rotation to improve soil fertility. Many species of clover are remarkably rich in protein and are grown as forage for livestock. Clover (Shamrock) is one of the unofficial symbols of Ireland. They are very interesting the medicinal properties of the plant.
