Nome Botanico: Laurocerasus.

Breve Descrizione: Arbusto/albero di media altezza, piantato in luoghi spaziosi può raggiungere i 7 metri (max 15 m), cresce rapidamente. Le foglie sono verde scuro, molto più chiare e lucide quando giovani; spesse (1-1,5 mm) e coriacee; di forma oblunga, e tondeggiante verso l'apice; lievemente seghettate verso l'esterno. Fiorisce tra aprile/ giugno, i fiori sono bianchi; ermafroditi; disposti a racemo, dall'odore profumato, ma acido. I frutti sono drupe (1 cm ca.) rosse/viola quando acerbe, e nero-bluastre una volta raggiunta la maturazione.

Durata: Perenne.

Periodo Di Fioritura: Tra primavere ed Estate.

Clima: Temperato.

Uso: Trova impiego come pianta ornamentale e da barriera (siepe) grazie al suo fitto fogliame. In passato il distillato, l'acqua di lauroceraso, veniva usato come calmante per la tosse. Se assunto in quantità eccessive poteva provocare un'intossicazione. Vengono ricavati tuttora degli oli essenziali usati come aroma (in quantità minime) nei liquori, dall'odore di mandorle amare tipico dell'acido cianidrico. L'alta concentrazione di acido cianidrico rende appunto questa pianta tossica per l'uomo e per gli animali domestici in caso di ingestione accidentale.

Brief Description: Shrub / tree of medium height, planted in spacious places can reach 7 meters (maximum 15 m), grows rapidly. Use: It is used as an ornamental plant and as a barrier (hedge) due to its dense foliage. In the past the distilled water of cherry laurel, was used as a sedative for coughs. When taken in excessive amounts could cause poisoning. Are still made of essential oils used as a flavoring (in small amounts) in spirits, the smell of bitter almonds typical of hydrogen cyanide. The high concentration of hydrogen cyanide makes precisely this plant toxic to humans and pets in case of accidental ingestion.
