Breve Descrizione: Pianta fiorita, può essere annuale o perenne, da esterni se il clima lo consente, altrimenti coltivabile in vaso. Di facile manutenzione e reperibilità. Esistono circa 300 specie dalle caratteristiche e dai colori variabili. In generale i fusti sono nodosi e le foglie lanceolate. Il D.caryophyllus è la specie più nota, quella cha ha dato origine ai garofani dei fioristi, presenta un' infiorescenza grande e profumata ed è ottimo come fiore reciso.

Uso: Viene generalmente coltivato come pianta da giardino, per la coltivazione in vaso, alcune specie sono più adatte di altre. Le specie nane sono perfette per i giardini rocciosi, quelle da bordura hanno cespi più sviluppati.
