Breve Descrizione: La pianta ha portamento a cespuglio o ad albero e raggiunge l'altezza di 5-7 m.
Ha foglie decidue, semplici, cuoriforme a margine dentato. È una specie monoica diclina. Le infiorescenze sono unisessuali. Le maschili in amenti penduli che si formano in autunno, le femminili somigliano ad una gemma di piccole dimensioni. Ogni cultivar di Nocciolo è autosterile ed ha bisogno di essere impollinata da un'altra cultivar. Il frutto (la ben nota nocciola o nocciolina) è avvolto da brattee da cui si libera a maturazione e cade. Esso è commestibile ed è ricco di un olio, usato sia nell'alimentazione che nell'industria dei colori e in profumeria.

Uso: Vengono coltivate numerose varietà da frutto e ornamentali: tra queste ultime sono notevoli la varietà pendula, la varietà contorta, a portamento tortuoso, e la varietà fusco-rubra, a foglie porporine. È una pianta colonizzatrice che, avendo esigenze modeste in fatto di terreno e di clima, si adatta a svariate condizioni ambientali.

Has deciduous, simple, heart-shaped margin toothed. It is a monoecious diclina. The inflorescences are unisexual. The male in pendulous catkins that are formed in the fall, the female resemble a small gem. Each cultivar Hazel is self-sterile and need to be pollinated by another cultivar. The fruit (the well-known hazelnut or peanut) is surrounded by bracts which is released when ripe and falls. It is edible and is rich in oil, used both feeding and industry of colors and in perfumery.
