Breve Descrizione: Genere che comprende circa 60 specie di piante a portamento compatto, con stelo succulento e grandi foglie lanceolate. Produce vistose infiorescenze costituite da ventagli rigidi, di colore cremisi, vellutati, contorti, larghi fino a 12 cm. Sono piante di facile coltivazione, la specie da cui derivano quasi tutte le varietà è la C. argentea, con infiorescenze bianco-argentee che possono essere erette o pendenti. Nella sottospecie C. argentea plumosa, le foglie sono ovate ed i fiori sono riuniti in spighe erette, piumose, rosa, rosse, gialle o arancioni; la C. argenea cristata, possiede foglie bronzate o verdognole e particolari infiorescenze spigate e sinuose di colori variabili dal rosso al giallo, con diverse sfumature.

Durata: Perenne, ma coltivata come annuale.

Periodo Di Fioritura: Fioritura indicativamente da inizio giugno a circa fine settembre.

Area Di Origine: America del nord, Asia, Africa.

Clima: Temperato.

Uso: Pianta ornamentale coltivata per le spettacolari infiorescenze a spiga. Sono adatte per la coltivazione in vaso e in aiuole; i fiori essiccati si usano per le decorazioni invernali.

The subspecies C. argentea plumosa, the leaves are ovate and the flowers are grouped in spikes erect, feathery, pink, red, yellow or orange; the C. argenea cristata, has greenish or bronzed leaves and inflorescences details spigate sinuous and variable color from red to yellow, with different nuances.

Duration: Perennial, but grown as an annual.

Flowering Period: Flowering generally from early June to about the end of September.

Area Of Origin: North America, Asia, Africa.

Climate: Temperate.

Use: Ornamental plant grown for its spectacular inflorescence spike. They are suitable for growing in pots and flower beds; dried flowers are used for winter decorations.
