Breve Descrizione: Il cartamo è una composita annuale, che giunge ad una altezza di 1-1,4m; caratteristica per la spinosita' delle foglie superiori e delle bratte fiorali. La radice è tipicamente fittonante, molto profonda ( 1-1,5m). Ogni ramificazione termina con una infiorescenza a capolino che porta fino a 100 fiori, tutti tubulati, circondati da una plurima serie di bratte spinose. I fiori sono gialli, giallo-rossastri o anche bianchi. A fecondazione avvenuta, prevalentemente autogama, i fiori, evolvono in acheni di colore bianco brillante che a maturita' hanno un contenuto di acqua del 9%-10% ed uno di olio del 38%-40%. Attualmente il cartamo ha importanza soprattutto come pianta oleifera; il suo interesse per l'italia è solo potenziale.

The root is typically taproot, very deep (1-1,5 m). Each branch ends in an inflorescence head which leads up to 100 flowers, all tubulati, surrounded by a series of multiple spiny bracts. The flowers are yellow, reddish-yellow or even white. A fertilization took place, predominantly autogamous, flowers, evolve into achenes of bright white color which in maturity 'have a water content of 9% -10% and an oil of 38% -40%.
