Sono costituite da cespugli densi, tondeggianti, costituiti da fusti sottili a foglie generalmente composte, simili a felci, appuntite e dentellate, di colore verde scuro; alcune specie hanno foglie bronzee o rossastre. Producono lunghe infiorescenze erette, talvolta arcuate, più alte del cespuglio, a forma piramidale e dall'aspetto piumoso e soffice: sono costituite da innumerevoli piccoli fiori, di colore rosso, crema, bianco, rosa o lilla.
