Breve Descrizione: Genere che comprende diverse specie originarie dell'Africa. Sono piante perenni oramai abbastanza diffuse, cespugliose, con parte basale legnosa. Le radici sono carnose o fibrose e producono i turioni (gli asparagi commestibili) di colore verde. Se non vengono raccolti essi ramificano, diventando poi coriacei, fino a raggiungere diversi metri di altezza. Dai rami adulti si sviluppano le spine e le false foglie. In estate produce dei piccoli fiorellini leggermente profumati. Il frutto è una bacca rossa.
