text to be perfected

a trunk belonging to Walter May (1869-1947), 1st husband of Amelia Agnes Bardoe May Kebby, now in the possession of his granddaughter in New Zealand

the writing reads:

James Bardoe Born 1 of June 1845

Northfleet, Kent

J. Bardoe

1845

● photos all taken in May 2015

● it is unclear how it came to be in Walter May’s possession

● James was the brother of Job Bardoe, Amelia Agnes’ father

● whether the trunk originally belonged to James (in which case, would he necessarily have written his date of birth inside?), and eventually came into the possession of Amelia Agnes, then of (her) estranged husband, is not clear

● it may not have belonged to James at all, there may be some other reason why James’ name was inside

● the current owner comments: “After my Father died my Mother came out to New Zealand to live with us, bringing Grandfather May’s Trunk with her - much to my horror when it arrived I saw she had painted the lid in thick white paint and had written in big bold writing in black her name and the address that the trunk was being delivered to in New Zealand - Mum kept a squab cushion on the top to hide the paint work and kept it in her bedroom!  - eventually I got around to stripping the paint off with paint stripper, I had tried sanding it down, which wasn't very successful due to the many cracks, crevices and dents it had picked up on its travels over the last 150 years or so - once the paint stripper had done it's job I had to wash the residue of with plenty of water, and this in turn seeped into the inside of the trunk making the green & black heavily embossed wallpaper that was lining it come unstuck revealing the pencilled message about James Bardoe ..... if it hadn't of been for my Mum’s paint job we would never have known the writing was there!!
