a page from the Bell family album, identities still to be established

● an expert in dating old photographs says:

(1) not much to go on, hair looks ordinary, maybe collar, maybe shoulders - shoulder design common from 1890 to 1900

(2-3) lots of similarities - shape of face, high brow, same parting and hairline, same nose, same ears, similar mouth, not sure about the eyes - could be father and son, could be brothers, could be same person young and old

(2) wide lapel, folded collar, cravat so best guess is mid 1890's which means it could possibly be same person young and  old - maybe 25 years between photos

(3) definitely 1870's from the style of the jacket and lapel and large buttons - again supports the same person theory

THE RYAN-BELL BROTHERS’ SCHOOL RECORDS

school admissions register

Hugh Randolph

Ralph John

Douglas Howard

● as it is so difficult to scan large ADMISSIONS REGISTERS, this is a Word document summarising the entries for BELL

● RECORD CARDS are for those boys who were at school in 1904 and later (the record card system was introduced in 1904, so members of the family who were at school prior to that date will not have a card - their details were entered into an Admissions Register instead

● SCHOOL LISTS, which record academic results - boys are graded according to subject: General Work (GW), German (G), French (F), Drawing (D) and Science (S) - the subjects tested varied according to year group, so some lists include all of the above, others just GW and F, for example

· the upper handwriting is possibly Ann(i)e Jane’s – the  lower is Ralph John’s, his granddaughter recognises it -  he mistakenly wrote “cousin” instead of “sister-in-law”
