Brockley
Cemetery, formerly Deptford Cemetery, was opened 1858 on previously open land,
and is a characteristic example of the first wave of Victorian public
cemeteries, and is now part of the Brockley
Conservation Area. Together with Ladywell Cemetery,
previously known as Lewisham Cemetery, it occupies 37 acres (150,000m2)
of land wholly within the London Borough of Lewisham and is owned and managed
by the Cemeteries and Crematorium Services of the Borough. They are also
nature conservation sites of Borough Importance Grade 1 and a haven for
wildlife, plants and wildflowers. Both cemeteries hold a wealth of historical
interest. Evidence of Deptford's seafaring past can be found in the many
inscriptions and adornments on the headstones. |

The area was
originally pleasure gardens, opened in 1834, but turned into a cemetery in
1837, as the
'Gravesend & Milton Cemetery Company'. The first burial in the cemetery
took place in 1839. The original cemetery company was declared bankrupt in
1847 but the cemetery continued in private ownership until 1905 when it was
acquired by Gravesend Corporation. The Lodge, Chapel and Catacombs and the
original part of the cemetery are Grade 2 listed and are also included on the
English Heritage Register for Parks and Gardens of Historic Interest |

GREENWICH,
KENT |

Greenwich
Cemetery was founded 1856 by the Burial Board. There are two Gothic chapels,
and a 1930’s lodge. Around the cemetery are railings, and brick piers with
stone capitals. There are panoramic views from top of hill of Crystal Palace
and towards the City. There are various areas within the cemetery such as
Great War Heroes Corner and Commonwealth Burial Ground, a Norwegian section
for refugees of World War II, and a Children's section. Due to the proximity
of the military academy and other institutions at Woolwich, there are many
soldiers buried here. As almost all the Durham deaths in the area occurred
before 1856, perhaps they are not buried here, but at St Alphege’s
Church, Greenwich |

NUNHEAD
CEMETERY, SURREY ALL SAINTS' CEMETERY |

Nunhead Cemetery is
perhaps the least known, but most attractive, of the great Victorian
Cemeteries of London. Consecrated in 1840, it is one of the seven great
Victorian cemeteries established in a ring around the outskirts of London. It
contains examples of the magnificent monuments erected in memory of the most
eminent citizens of the day, which contrast sharply with the small, simple
headstones marking common, or public, burials. It's formal avenue of towering
limes and the Gothic gloom of the original Victorian planting gives way to
paths which recall the country lanes of a bygone era |

NORWOOD,
SURREY, SOUTH METROPOLITAN CEMETERY |

also known as
(West) Norwood Cemetery, it is a 40-acre (16 ha) cemetery in West Norwood,
London Borough of Lambeth, consecrated in 1837 - one of the first private
landscaped cemeteries in London, it is one of the Magnificent Seven
cemeteries of London, and is a site of major historical, architectural and
ecological interest. Its grounds are a mixture of historic monumental
cemetery and modern lawn cemetery, but it also has catacombs, cremation plots
and a columbarium for cindery ashes. The cemetery's crematorium still
operates, and cremation plots are still available, but all the conventional
burial plots have been allocated and hence it is closed to new burials
pending further agreement under current burial legislation |
